If you are aiming for those classic sitter portraits where your baby is laughing and sitting up, the 6 to 9-month window is your sweet spot. Any earlier and they might not be ready to hold their pose, and any later, they are usually off crawling and exploring. My Bhandup studio is kept warm and fully stocked with all the props and costumes we need, so you do not have to worry about bringing a thing.
Capturing the First Year
The first twelve months are a blur of growth. As a photographer who has been documenting families in Mumbai since 1975, I have learned that every stage requires a different approach.
Newborn Lifestyle Sessions These are all about keeping it quiet and calm. Newborns are delicate, and my focus is on capturing those peaceful, swaddled moments and the way they curl up in your arms. We keep the studio lighting soft and the environment warm, ensuring the baby stays comfortable throughout the session. These photos are about the raw, honest connection between parent and child.
Sitter Sessions (6 to 9 Months) This is often my favorite age to photograph. Once a baby starts sitting up unassisted, their little personality really comes out. They are curious, they giggle at funny noises, and they are not yet fast enough to run away from the camera. At my Bhandup West studio, I use this stage to introduce themes—whether it is a tiny musician at a piano, a beach explorer, or a classic scholar setup.
The Studio Experience Everything happens in-studio so you do not have to worry about travel logistics with an infant or unpredictable weather. I handle the backdrops, the outfits, and the cleanup.
