Major Tattoo Transformations and Cover-Ups
Your skin tells your story, but sometimes the chapters change. We specialize in transforming faded tattoos and outgrown designs into fresh, meaningful art that honors your journey.
This video shows the process of the lion cover-up, from applying the stencil over the old tattoo to the finished, powerful piece. It demonstrates how a large, detailed design can effectively reclaim the skin.
A different angle of the completed lion cover-up, showing how the design wraps around the shoulder. The use of light and shadow in this black and grey realism piece is key to its powerful presence.
A close-up view of the lion's face. Notice the fine details in the fur and the intensity in the eyes. This level of detail is what makes a cover-up successful, drawing the eye to the new art.
The final "Vihaan" name tattoo, shown on its own. The bold, clean script and the delicate heartbeat line create a beautiful and heartfelt piece that completely replaces what was there before.
Watch the wing cover-up come to life. This video captures the journey from placing the stencil to the final shading, showing the meticulous work required to build layers and create a seamless new tattoo.
Here you can see the first step in the Japanese landscape cover-up. The stencil is carefully placed over the old tattoo, serving as the blueprint for the new artwork and ensuring complete coverage.
About Major Transformations: Full Cover-Ups
A successful cover-up is rarely about simply erasing the past, but rather working with what is already there. Because we use darker shades and high-contrast designs to mask old pigment, your new tattoo will often need to be larger and more intricate than the original. We sit down to plan a design—whether it is a detailed lion portrait or a structured floral piece—that strategically uses the old, dark spots as natural shadows, ensuring your new artwork is the only thing that stands out.
How We Approach Transformation
When you come to us for a cover-up, we treat the process like a consultation for a new chapter. We do not just slap a new design over the old one. We start by analyzing the fade level and the depth of the existing ink. If the old tattoo is too dark, we may discuss a session to lighten it first, or we build a design that naturally integrates those darker elements into the shading of your new piece.
The Process
Every cover-up begins with a custom design strategy. We map out the old lines and spots to determine where we can use them as anchors for the new artwork. For instance, in a Japanese landscape or a detailed portrait like the lion work we often do, we use the density of the new black-and-grey packing to create depth where the old design lacked it. This is why we often use coil machines and specific needle groupings for solid color packing to ensure total coverage.
Aftercare and Healing
Cover-up tattoos require specific care because we are often tattooing over scar tissue or skin that has already been worked on. We apply medical-grade film dressings to protect the area, and we provide a digital monitoring check to ensure the old ink does not bleed through as the skin heals. If any part of the old tattoo peeks through after the healing process, we include a touch-up session to ensure the finish is flawless.
