About Cultural & Performance Arts
The Arangetram is the culmination of years of hard work, and that story starts long before the curtain rises. I love focusing on the quiet, focused energy of the green room—the way jewelry is carefully adjusted, the application of alata on hands, and those final moments of breath before the performance begins.
When I photograph a classical dance performance like a Bharatanatyam Arangetram, I am looking for more than just a sharp image. I am looking for the connection between the dancer and their art. My background in English literature makes me naturally gravitate towards the narrative behind the movement, ensuring that the 'bhavas' or expressions you have practiced for years are preserved in every frame.
My approach is unobtrusive. You will often find me moving around the stage wings or quietly documenting the backstage preparations, capturing the camaraderie and the nervous anticipation that defines these events. Whether it is a close-up of a mudra, the sway of the costume during a performance, or the proud expressions of family members in the audience, I aim for authenticity over staged perfection.
I understand that these performances involve specific lighting and movement constraints. I use equipment that allows for high shutter speeds to freeze motion without losing the warmth and atmosphere of the venue. Because I am based in Mumbai but travel across India, I am comfortable working in various auditoriums and temple settings. If you have a specific vision for your photoshoot or a particular aesthetic you want to achieve, we can discuss that during our initial chat. My goal is to ensure you can relive the intensity and the joy of your Arangetram every time you look back at these images.
