About Hair Care 101: My Expert Tips
When you start oiling your scalp, don't panic if you see a bit more shedding initially. This is usually just hair in the resting phase being released faster. Give it two to five months of consistent oiling, and you will likely start seeing new, healthy growth come through.
Understanding Your Hair Cycle
Many of you ask why hair fall seems to increase when you first start using herbal oils. It is simple science. About 14% of your hair is in the telogen (resting) phase at any time. When you massage your scalp, you are physically stimulating the follicles, which helps shed these resting hairs faster. This is a temporary phase. If you stay consistent for two to five months, your shedding will normalize, and you will start seeing the healthy new growth you are aiming for.
Simple Daily Tweaks for Healthier Hair
Small changes in your daily routine can make a massive difference:
- Ditch the Towel Friction: Regular cotton towels have large loops that cause frizz and breakage. Switch to a microfiber towel or an old cotton t-shirt to wrap your hair. It dries your hair faster and keeps the cuticle smooth.
- The Right Tool: If you are still using plastic or metal combs, switch to a neem wooden comb. Neem has natural antibacterial properties that help keep your scalp clean, reduce dandruff, and prevent the static that leads to breakage.
- Avoid Over-Oiling: You do not need to drown your hair in oil. Applying oil two to three times a week is plenty. Be generous with your application, but avoid being excessive, and never tie your hair in a tight ponytail immediately after oiling. Your strands are most fragile when wet or soaked in oil.
Protect Your Cuticles
Frizzy hair is often just a sign of damaged cuticles. To keep frizz at bay, try sleeping on a satin pillowcase or using a satin bonnet. These materials create less friction than cotton, protecting your hair while you sleep.
