Architectural and Detail Lighting Design
Lighting is the jewellery of architecture. By manipulating beams and shadows, I turn flat surfaces into textured highlights and simple corridors into purposeful journeys.
A close-up of a wall grazing technique applied to curtains. A concealed linear light fixture washes down the fabric, highlighting the deep folds and creating a beautiful, dramatic gradient from light to dark. This adds depth and a sense of luxury to the wall.
This residential passage shows how lighting can turn a simple hallway into a destination. A single, narrow-beam downlight is precisely aimed to accent the art piece and console table at the end of the corridor, drawing the eye forward and creating a focal point.
About Architectural & Detail Lighting
Good lighting design is not about adding fixtures, it is about the angle of incidence. When we apply wall grazing to a textured surface like curtains or stone, we position the light just millimetres away from the wall. If that distance is off by even an inch, the shadow quality collapses and the texture is lost entirely.
Technical Precision in Every Beam
My approach to architectural lighting is rooted in hard technical planning. Before a single fixture is installed, we run Dialux simulations to map out lux levels and ensure that the light output matches the functional needs of the space. Lighting isn't just decoration; it is a structural element.
The Mechanics of Grazing and Washing
To bring depth to a wall or highlight material textures, we use grazing techniques. This requires specific narrow-beam optics placed at calculated distances from the substrate. For uniform illumination across larger areas, we shift to wall washing, which requires a wider, softer distribution to eliminate hot spots.
Creating Movement through Light
Corridors often become neglected spaces, but they are critical for the flow of a home. We use light to guide the eye. A single, high-output downlight placed at the end of a passage creates a focal point, naturally pulling the user through the space. This is not arbitrary; it is about managing the user's focus and reducing the clutter of multiple overhead lights that cause glare.
Key Considerations for Your Project
- Circuit Logic: We group lights by function, not just by room. Hosting scenes require different circuit planning than evening relaxation.
- Control Compatibility: Every fixture I specify is checked against your home automation protocol, whether it is DALI or 0-10V, to ensure zero-flicker performance.
- Installation Supervision: The most important phase is the focusing visit. After installation, I manually adjust every beam angle to match the room's specific furniture layout, ensuring the light hits exactly where it should.
Illuminaty
I am Harkiran, and at Illuminaty, I treat light as the jewellery of architecture. My crew and I obsess over how light interacts with surfaces and moods, ensuring every fixture we specify has a functional reason to be there.
