About Gardening Tips & Plant Care

Most people think gardening is just about watering, but the real secret is the soil mix. For most indoor plants in Mumbai, a mix of 50% soil, 30% compost, and 10% each of sand and cocopeat works wonders to prevent waterlogging. If your leaves are turning yellow or the plant just isn't growing, don't worry. Send me a message and tell me which plant it is, and I can walk you through exactly what it needs.

Monsoon is the best time for propagation. You don't always need to buy new plants; you can grow many of your favorites like Hibiscus, Mogra, or even Money Plant from healthy cuttings. When you take a cutting, ensure you dip the end in some turmeric powder or aloe vera gel before potting it. This acts as a natural fungicide and helps the roots grow faster.

Common Plant Care FAQs

My Areca Palm leaves are turning brown, what do I do? Areca Palms are sensitive to water quality and humidity. Don't overwater them. Make sure the pot has good drainage, and occasionally wipe the leaves to clear dust. Adding a little Epsom salt to the water helps keep them green.

Which plants are good for keeping mosquitoes away? If mosquitoes are an issue on your balcony or near windows, plant Lavender or Rosemary. Their strong, natural scent acts as a barrier, and they keep the air fresh.

How often should I change the soil? Plants need nutrients to thrive. Every 3-4 months, gently remove the top 1-2 inches of soil and add a mix of fresh vermicompost or cow dung manure. This 'top-dressing' gives the plant a fresh boost of energy without disturbing the roots.

My plant isn't blooming. Why? Flowering plants need sunlight. If your Hibiscus or Bougainvillea is in a dark corner, it won't bloom. Move it to a spot with at least 4-5 hours of direct sunlight. Also, prune the faded flowers along with 1-2 leaves below them—this forces the plant to focus energy on new buds.
