You won't see me asking you to pose while you are covered in turmeric. Instead, I move around the chaos with a fast lens to catch the water fights, the genuine laughter, and that quiet look you share while everyone else is cheering. It is messy, it is loud, and it is my favorite part of the day to shoot.
When I am shooting a Haldi ceremony, my goal is not to get a perfect portrait of everyone standing in a line. I want the blur of motion, the flying marigold petals, and the genuine shock on your face when someone surprises you with a handful of paste.
Why Candid Matters for Haldi
Traditional posing feels unnatural during a Haldi. This ritual is defined by its unrestrained joy and the 'mess.' I use high-speed shutters and specific lighting techniques to freeze these split-second reactions—like a family member getting drenched or a couple laughing while wiping turmeric off each other's faces.
My Process
- Natural Light & Shadow: I prefer using the natural, warm light often found at outdoor Haldi setups in Bangalore gardens or terraces.
- Black & White Treatment: Sometimes, color can be distracting. I include select black and white shots in every Haldi gallery because they strip away the chaos and highlight the raw emotion and interaction between the couple.
- Unobtrusive Presence: My team and I move quickly and quietly. We treat ourselves like guests with cameras, allowing your friends and family to be themselves without feeling like they are on a stage.
