Performance & Traditional Costume Design
I design costumes that move with you. From intricate Kathak ensembles to soulful Sufi-inspired stage looks, I focus on fabrics and cuts that enhance your performance rather than restricting it.
A proud moment, performing Kathak in a costume I designed, in front of the Governor of Maharashtra. The right costume is essential for a dancer to fully express themselves.
A glimpse of the coordinated costumes I designed for a dance troupe. These matching deep blue velvet outfits were created to look striking on stage while allowing for a full range of movement.
The full dance group in their performance attire. Designing for a group requires ensuring that the costumes are cohesive yet allow each performer to shine individually.
Another pose from our dance performance. The rich velvet fabric and intricate details on the costumes were chosen to catch the stage lights beautifully.
This shot showcases the dynamic poses our costumes allow. The design combines traditional aesthetics with practical considerations for classical dance.
A more experimental, Sufi-inspired look. This costume, with its dark, flowing fabrics and minimalist design, was created to evoke a sense of peace and spiritual depth.
About Performance & Traditional Costumes
Performance costumes need to be more than just pretty; they have to handle the energy of your act. When I design for dancers, I focus on how the fabric flows during spins and jumps, ensuring the seams are reinforced and the weight doesn't slow you down. It is about finding that balance between traditional aesthetics and the practical reality of stage movement.
Whether you are a classical dancer or planning a conceptual stage act, the outfit is part of the performance itself. If a costume is too heavy, the footwork suffers. If the stitching is weak, the confidence drops during the high-energy parts of the set. My approach to performance and traditional costumes is rooted in experience—both as a designer and as someone who has stood on that stage.
Why Movement Matters
I have performed Kathak in front of state dignitaries, and that experience changed how I look at design. I know exactly where the friction happens during a fast-paced chakkardar (spin) and why the drape needs to be anchored specifically for Indian classical dance. I don't just supply fabric; I build the garment so you can forget it is there and focus entirely on your rhythm.
My Approach
- Fabric & Weight: I select materials that catch the stage lights beautifully but remain light enough for long performances. No one wants to be exhausted by the weight of their own outfit halfway through a song.
- Structural Integrity: My designs include reinforced stitching and hidden supports so you can move freely without worrying about a strap slipping or a pleat coming undone.
- Experimental Styling: Beyond traditional wear, I love working on Sufi-inspired concepts. This often involves working with moodier palettes and flowing silhouettes that create a sense of peace and depth on stage.
Sach kahun toh (honestly), designing for the stage is intense, but seeing a dancer truly comfortable in what they are wearing is the best feeling. If you have an upcoming show or a production that needs authentic, dance-ready costumes, let’s talk about how to bring your vision to life.
Harshstyle
I’m Harshaj. My work is my way of giving soul to a character or a performance. Whether it is a Kathak ensemble for a formal stage or something soulful for a Sufi-inspired project, I pour the same passion into it that my mother taught me.
