Plant Khuraak: Organic Fertilizer Recipes & Feeding Tips
Yellowing leaves or zero flowers? Even with the best potting mix, plants eventually get hungry. I will show you my go-to organic recipes to fix common nutrient deficiencies and keep your home garden thriving.
Sometimes even with a good potting mix, plants show problems like yellowing leaves due to a lack of micronutrients. I use this micronutrient booster liquid, which you can mix with water and apply to the soil or spray on the leaves of any plant to fix these deficiencies and promote healthy growth.
If your plants are struggling to produce flowers or fruits, this growth booster mix is the solution. I create a mix of bone meal for phosphorus, neem khali as a natural pest repellent, and compost for overall nutrition. Adding this to your pots once a month recharges the soil.
About Plant Khuraak: Feeding for Health & Blooms
Container gardening has a catch: limited space means nutrients wash out with every single watering. I use a simple, homemade ratio—one part bone meal, one part neem khali, and four parts compost—to recharge my pots every month. It is cheap, organic, and solves most flowering issues I see in Delhi terraces.
Why Your Plants Need a Monthly Recharge
When we grow plants in pots, we are working with a limited ecosystem. Unlike plants in the ground, our terrace friends cannot stretch their roots out to find new nutrients. Every time you water, essential minerals leach out from the bottom. This is why you might see yellowing leaves or stunted growth even if you started with a great potting mix.
My Go-To Fertilizer Recipe
I prefer keeping things organic. For a general boost, I mix 100 grams of this blend for my pots once a month:
- 1 Part Bone Meal: Great for phosphorus and calcium, which are essential for flowering and fruiting.
- 1 Part Neem Khali: A natural pest repellent that protects roots from soil-borne diseases.
- 4 Parts Well-Decomposed Compost: This provides the bulk of the macro and micro nutrients your plant needs.
Pro-tip: I also add two spoons of organic fungicide to this mix. It keeps fungal infections away, which is a lifesaver during Delhi’s humid spells.
Fixing Micronutrient Deficiencies
Sometimes, even with fertilizer, plants look weak. If you notice yellowing leaves that don't respond to regular compost, your plants might be lacking specific micronutrients like zinc or iron. In these cases, I use a micronutrient booster liquid. You can mix 5ml in 1 litre of water and either feed it to the soil or spray it directly on the leaves. It acts like a multivitamin for your plants, helping them recover faster from stress and environmental changes.
Ahista ahista, your plants will respond. Gardening is all about patience and believing in tomorrow. If you are struggling to get your hibiscus or tomatoes to bloom, try these recipes for a few weeks and see the difference.
