Cacti and succulents are perfect for bright balconies, but they need more than just sunlight. I'll help you fix your watering routine and pick the right pots so your collection actually thrives.

When I moved, I couldn't leave my cactus and sansevieria collection behind. Here's a look at how I shifted them and created a new dedicated space for them to flourish. They are some of my oldest plant friends.

How to water a cactus? The trick is not to water less, but to water less often. I let the soil dry out completely and then wait a couple more days before watering deeply. This mimics their natural environment and prevents root rot.

This is a beautiful barrel-type cactus from my collection. Notice the healthy green colour and strong spines, which are signs of a happy plant getting plenty of sunlight.

A look at some of the unique shapes and textures in my cactus collection. This one has interesting offshoots, or pups, growing from its side. These can eventually be separated to create new plants.

This Mammillaria cactus, with its distinctive shape and clustering habit, is a favourite in my collection. It's a relatively easy cactus to care for, making it a good choice for beginners.

Here you can see some grafted cacti. Grafting allows us to combine a hardy rootstock with a more interesting or colourful top cactus, creating unique and eye-catching specimens.

The spiral growth pattern on this cactus is just fascinating. Nature creates the most amazing designs. This is one of the more unusual pieces in my collection.

About My Cactus & Succulent Corner

Most people kill their cacti by watering too often with too little water. It is not about the number of days you wait, but about the soil drying completely through the entire pot. If you have been struggling with mushy stems, yellowing leaves, or shriveling plants, my custom potting mix formula is the first thing we need to fix to ensure your plants drain well.

Why Cacti Struggle in Our Climate

Growing cacti in Delhi NCR can be tricky because of our extreme summers and high humidity during the monsoon. Many gardeners make the mistake of buying delicate succulents like Echeverias, which are designed for cooler climates. When the Delhi heat hits, they often melt or rot. I always tell beginners to start with hardier varieties like Haworthias, Jades, or standard cacti that can actually handle our local weather.

My Proven Potting Mix Recipe

The secret to avoiding root rot is drainage. Do not use plain garden soil. My go-to mix for a healthy succulent garden is:

  • 20% Cinder
  • 20% Pebbles
  • 20% River Sand
  • 20% Cocopeat
  • 10% Perlite
  • 10% Compost

This specific blend ensures water passes through quickly, keeping the roots airy and preventing the 'soggy feet' that kill so many indoor plants.

Watering Secrets

The biggest myth is that cacti need less water, so people only sprinkle the top. Actually, they need deep watering, but at much longer intervals. I let the soil dry out completely, and then I wait an extra two days before watering again. If you follow this rule, you will see your plants stay firm and vibrant year-round.

Need a Consultation?

If your collection is already looking sad, I can help you diagnose the issue. Whether it is root rot or pest infestation, we can jump on a quick video call to assess your potting medium and placement to get your green friends back on track.
