Outdoor Design and Material Planning Guide
Planning an outdoor renovation is about more than just aesthetics. Here is a breakdown of the materials and structural elements we use to make your garden functional and long-lasting.
Choosing between WPC and Ipe for your deck? This guide breaks down the key differences in durability, maintenance, and cost to help you decide which material is best for your patio.
A quick guide to the most important elements of a successful terrace garden. We consider everything from structural additions like pergolas to flooring, furniture, and vertical gardens to create a cohesive space.
About Design & Material Guides
When choosing decking, consider the long game. Brazilian Ipe is a 'buy it once' choice that resists termites and lasts 70+ years, but it requires annual oiling. If you want something that is purely low-maintenance and fits a tighter budget, WPC is a reliable choice for a 15-20 year span, though it is softer and more prone to surface scratches.
Building Your Perfect Outdoor Space
A successful terrace garden or balcony setup depends on getting the foundation and the structure right. We don't believe in one-size-fits-all, which is why we guide our clients through the trade-offs before we pick up a tool.
The Foundation: Decking
Flooring is the single most important decision for your terrace.
- Brazilian Ipe: This is natural hardwood sourced from Brazil. It is fire-proof and incredibly dense, making it the top choice for high-traffic areas. The trade-off is the maintenance; you need to oil it annually to keep that deep, rich color.
- WPC (Wood Plastic Composite): If you prefer a 'set it and forget it' approach, WPC is the way to go. It is rot-resistant, termite-proof, and significantly cheaper than solid wood. It is perfect for balconies where you want a clean look without the yearly upkeep.
The Overhead: Pergolas & Gazebos
Structures define your outdoor room. Whether you are aiming for a modern MS metal pergola or a traditional Mangalore-tiled gazebo, your choice of roofing material changes how you use the space:
- Glass/Polycarbonate: Best for keeping the rain out while letting the light in. Ideal for creating a sunroom effect that works in the monsoon.
- Open Slats: Best for aesthetic appeal and creating dappled shade. It allows for airflow, which is critical in warmer climates.
Why Structure Matters
Before we start, we check structural load, drainage, and utility access. A garden is only as good as the prep work underneath. We handle the heavy lifting, from the anti-rust epoxy primer on our MS tubes to the hidden clip systems on your deck, so you don't have to worry about leaks or structural failure later.
