Your dog's health starts in their bowl. Here are simple, practical guides on nutrition, weight management, and feeding habits to help your furry family member thrive.

How much food should you give your dog? It's a common question. In this guide, I explain how to calculate the right portion size based on your dog's weight and size category, from small breeds to giants.

What is your dog's ideal weight? It's not about the breed standard, but about their body condition. I demonstrate a simple hands-on method to check if your dog is underweight, overweight, or just right.

Eating healthy doesn't have to be expensive. In this video, I share some budget-friendly yet highly nutritious ingredients you can add to your dog's diet, like eggshell powder for calcium, curd for probiotics, and healthy fats like ghee.

Your dog's health issues will never truly improve until you fix their nutrition. A high-protein, meat-based diet is fundamental for everything from strong muscles and a shiny coat to good gut health, which prevents many common problems.

I want to be very clear: an overweight dog is not a healthy dog. I learned this with my own Shibu. Switching to a proper, meat-based diet helped her become lean, energetic, and free from health issues. A lean body is a sign of good health and a long, happy life.

About Pet Parent University: Tips & Guides

Most pet parents overfeed because they follow the generic instructions on the back of a commercial kibble bag. If you want to know if your dog is at their ideal weight, don't rely on a chart. You should be able to feel their ribs under a thin layer of fat, and their waist should look tucked in from above. If you can't feel their ribs, or if their stomach isn't tucked in, it is time to adjust their daily intake.

Being a pet parent is a continuous learning process. I started this journey because I was tired of the hidden fillers in factory-made food. When I switched my own dogs, Shibu and Momo, to a species-appropriate diet, the changes were visible in just 15 days: better energy, shiny coats, and no more allergy flare-ups.

Why Nutrition Matters

Your dog's gut health is the foundation of their immunity. A diet loaded with grains, preservatives, and artificial flavors disrupts their digestive system, leading to common issues like bad breath, shedding, and obesity.

The Essentials of a Healthy Diet

  • Protein is King: Dogs are carnivores at heart. Their meals should prioritize real, lean meat and organ meat for essential B12.
  • Healthy Fats: Cold-pressed coconut oil or ghee can be great for a shiny coat and energy, but keep portions tight if your dog is sedentary.
  • Supplementing Smart: If you are cooking at home, adding eggshell powder provides necessary calcium, while curd helps with probiotics.

Dealing with Commercial Food

'Label Padhega India' is not just a slogan; it is a necessity. If the ingredients list has more than five items or includes things you cannot pronounce, it is likely not helping your pet.

When to Consult

Every dog is different. A small breed has different metabolic needs than a large breed. If you are trying to switch your pet to a fresh food diet, do it gradually to avoid digestive upset. If you are unsure about portion sizes or have a dog with specific allergies, send me a message. I am happy to help you figure out a balanced plan that works for your pet's body type and activity level.

I am a dog mom first, not a factory owner. Everything I know about nutrition started in my own kitchen when I saw my dogs, Shibu and Momo, struggling with weight, and I decided to take their health into my own hands.
