Naturalistic Ponds and Water Gardens
We design and build balanced, self-sustaining water ecosystems for homes and commercial spaces, focusing on functional filtration and natural aesthetics.
A large water garden we designed and implemented for a commercial property. This feature includes aquatic plants like papyrus and water lilies, along with fish, creating a vibrant and self-sustaining ecosystem that enhances the modern architecture.
This video showcases our complete landscape design and execution for a private residence, featuring a natural pond seamlessly integrated with the lawn, pathways, and outdoor seating areas.
Our work extends beyond the water's edge. This project demonstrates how we design and execute a complete landscape, integrating water bodies, lush lawns, stone pathways, and mature planting to create a cohesive and immersive natural environment.

About this collection
Building a naturalistic pond is about more than aesthetics; it is about establishing a functional, self-sustaining ecosystem. We integrate professional-grade UV bio-filtration systems and surface skimmers to manage organic debris and prevent algae blooms, ensuring your water remains clear and healthy year-round without requiring constant manual intervention.
When we build water gardens, we approach them as civil engineering projects rather than simple decorative features. Our process begins with the structural foundation, utilizing either a reinforced concrete shell or heavy-duty EPDM geo-membrane liners depending on your site conditions. We ensure all structures are treated with fish-safe, cementitious waterproofing to protect your property and the ecosystem.
The Technical Build
Our naturalistic designs rely on three core components:
- Filtration: We install pressure bio-filters with built-in UV clarifiers. This is the heart of a low-maintenance pond, breaking down waste and eliminating the green water caused by algae.
- Rockery & Edging: We use responsibly sourced river boulders, pebbles, and slate stones to mask the pond edges and create naturalistic transitions between water and land.
- Aquatic Planting: We select specific submerged oxygenators, water lilies, and papyrus to thrive in your local climate. These plants serve a dual purpose: they look natural and they actively compete with algae for nutrients, keeping your water chemistry stable.
Why Our Approach Differs
Many installers focus only on the visual rock placement. We handle the full scope: excavation, plumbing for pumps and returns, electrical connections for lighting, and the ecosystem balance. Whether you want a compact koi pond or a larger water garden, we ensure the design integrates with your existing landscape—lawns, stone pathways, and garden lighting. If you have an existing garden, we coordinate with your site to ensure our pond construction does not disrupt your current softscapes.
Ecoscapes Landscaping
I started Ecoscapes 15 years ago because I wanted to change how outdoor spaces are built. My team and I handle everything from the initial site excavation to the final water filtration setup, so you never have to deal with multiple contractors. We are straightforward about what works for your specific site and what does not.
