Classic Black & White Mandala Art
There is a quiet magic in the contrast of ink on paper. These monochromatic mandalas are my favorite form of therapy—slow, deliberate, and deeply calming.
A close-up look at the details of a large, intricate piece. Every line and dot is placed with intention. This kind of detailed work is a deep form of meditation for me.
This full-page A4 mandala with patterned borders is a testament to patience. The dense, repeating patterns create a powerful visual rhythm that draws you into the center.
A slightly different angle of the same A4 piece, showing how the light catches the ink. This design is available for purchase if you'd like to bring this calm into your home.
The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. This A4 mandala has a beautiful, lace-like quality, with delicate loops and fills.
Another view of this dreamy, intricate mandala. I love getting lost in creating these complex patterns. This piece is also available for purchase.
"Trust the vibes you get, energy doesn't lie." This is one of my most intricate designs, with ornate elements framing the central mandala. It was a joy to create.
A classic black and white mandala with a yin-yang symbol at its heart, representing the balance I strive to find through my art.
About this collection
Unlike the fast-paced world outside, these pieces are built on a slow, rhythmic foundation. I start with a simple grid on 300 GSM paper, carefully layering every petal and weave by hand to create that signature symmetry. If you want to learn how to find this same stillness through your own pen strokes, we can start with these foundational black-and-white patterns in my workshops.
Why Black and White?
For me, stripping away the color is the fastest way to get to the heart of a mandala. Without the distraction of colors, you are forced to focus entirely on the pattern, the line weight, and the symmetry. It is a form of active meditation. The 'saadgi' (simplicity) of just a black fineliner on high-quality paper allows you to see every mistake and every success clearly. It teaches patience in a way that nothing else does.
The Process
Every piece in this gallery starts the same way. I map out a light grid using a compass and ruler. This structure is what gives you the freedom to go crazy with the patterns later. In my beginner workshops, we spend a significant amount of time getting comfortable with this grid construction. Once the frame is solid, the ink work begins. I use premium 300 GSM paper because it handles the density of the ink without bleeding, which is essential when you are layering dozens of different filler patterns.
What You Will Learn
My sessions aren't just about finishing a drawing; they are about understanding the rhythm of the lines. We cover:
- Grid Mastery: Setting up the foundation so your mandala stays balanced.
- Pattern Library: Learning 10 to 15 fundamental fillers—petals, weaves, and geometric motifs—that you can mix and match.
- Flow State: We use simple breathwork techniques to help you move from a stressful day into a 'flow state' where the drawing happens almost on its own.
Whether you are looking for a unique custom piece for your living room or you want to spend a Saturday morning learning to create your own, I am here to help you get started.
Varsha
I’m Varsha, a Mumbai-based artist who believes that art is the best kind of therapy. When things get too loud, I sit down with my fineliners and let the rhythm of patterns bring me back to myself. I would love to help you find that same calm in your day.
