Our Unique Approach to Character Psychology
We blend creative writing with clinical psychology to help you build characters that breathe. Join us at our Indiranagar space for this deep dive into narrative transformation.
"A character changes, when something changes." We focus on building dynamic character arcs, moving beyond simple plot points to explore the internal and external shifts that create meaningful transformation.
"Understand Powerplay." This workshop gives you the tools to dissect and write about power dynamics in relationships, a key element for creating tension and realism in your stories.
"What happens in a story when someone takes a stand?" We analyze the moments of conflict and conviction that define a character and drive a narrative forward, helping you craft more impactful scenes.
"Every story is about the edge." We teach you how to find and explore the "edge" for your characters, the boundary between their known world and the unknown, where true growth and narrative tension lie.
About Our Unique Approach
Most writing workshops just talk about plot holes. Here, you are sitting with me and Kalpana Tanwar, a clinical psychotherapist, to figure out exactly why your characters make bad decisions. We do not just focus on the what of your story, we look at the psychological why behind the power dynamics and emotional shifts, ensuring your characters feel like real people, not just pawns moving across a page.
This workshop is for BWW Classic alumni who are ready to stop scratching the surface and start digging into the marrow of their stories. We run this over five weeks at Bridge Work365 in Indiranagar, taking the time to actually test your theories rather than just discussing them.
Why Psychology Matters in Fiction
If you have ever wondered why some characters pop off the page while others feel like cardboard cutouts, it usually comes down to psychological realism. Real people are messy, contradictory, and driven by hidden needs. When you apply concepts like Jungian archetypes or the 'Shadow Self' to your protagonist, you stop writing plot-driven scenes and start writing character-driven truth.
What We Actually Do
- Collaborative Teaching: You are learning from both a narrative expert and a clinical psychotherapist. This dual perspective keeps the feedback grounded in both craft and human behavior.
- Role-Play Exercises: We use psychodrama techniques to help you inhabit your characters. You will have to stand in their shoes, defend their choices, and understand their limitations in real-time, which often breaks the writer's block that stems from over-thinking.
- Power Dynamics Analysis: We examine the tension in your scenes by mapping out the power shifts. Who holds the leverage? Why are they giving it up? Understanding this changes how you write conflict, moving it away from cliché arguments into meaningful confrontation.
The Logistics
We keep this group intimate because the work is intense. We meet on Sundays from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm at our space in Indiranagar. Coffee, tea, and snacks are on us, because deep work requires fuel. If you are a past BWW member looking to elevate your current manuscript or just get unstuck, this is where you need to be.
Bhumika Anand
I am Bhumika, the founder of BWW, and I started this because I wanted a space where stories are treated with the seriousness they deserve. I am not here to lecture you; I am here to walk alongside you as you dig into the messy, complicated human truths that make for great fiction.
