Studio Ghibli: The Indian Chronicles Art Collection
I reimagined my favorite Studio Ghibli characters exploring the diverse landscapes of India. From Howl in Ladakh to Totoro in Pondicherry, these illustrations blend Ghibli magic with the places I call home.
Here it is, the launch of my 2025 calendar, 'Studio Ghibli: The Indian Chronicles'. It's a dream project, combining my love for Ghibli's magic with the soul of India. Each calendar comes with a wooden easel and is ready to bring some wonder to your desk.
A quick look at all the months from my 2025 Ghibli calendar. From Howl in Ladakh to Totoro in Pondicherry, I poured my heart into every single illustration. You can see the textured paper and the vibrant colors that make each piece special. DM me to order yours.
Here’s a little peek into my process for the January 2025 calendar theme. I'm creating a scene with Howl and Sophie in Ladakh, blending the magic of 'Howl's Moving Castle' with the serene, snowy mountains and prayer flags of the region.
This is the feeling I've been chasing, creating something I've always imagined. This video shows me working on a piece for my Ghibli calendar, a classical Indian dancer drawn in the Ghibli style. It's a fusion of two worlds that I love.
I had a little fun imagining what would happen if Totoro visited the Bengaluru Literature Festival. Of course, he'd trade a sunflower for a novel. This digital illustration is just a playful example of how Ghibli characters inspire me every day.
The food in Ghibli films always looks so delicious. Here, I'm painting the 'Soyu Ramen' from Ponyo using gouache. Capturing the warmth and comfort of that simple meal was a joy, and it’s one of the many small moments that make these films so special.
This is a feeling AI can never replicate. Working on a Totoro-inspired painting on a round canvas, feeling the texture of the board and mixing the gouache. This piece is all about the simple joy of creating something with my own hands.
A little DIY project for all the Ghibli lovers. Here’s how I made a custom bookmark featuring Ponyo and Sosuke. It’s a simple way to carry a bit of Ghibli magic with you in your favorite book.
A crossover I've always dreamed of: Kiki taking a break with Totoro in a sunny field. I created this piece on Procreate, imagining a quiet moment between two of my favorite characters under a big, Ghibli-style sky.
For all the book lovers, I've created a set of Studio Ghibli bookmarks to go with my calendars. This collection features characters like Totoro, the Soot Sprites, and Arrietty, perfect for marking your page in style.
About Studio Ghibli: The Indian Chronicles
Every calendar and print in this series is produced on premium 280-300 GSM textured paper to hold the watercolor details, mimicking the feel of my original sketches. I pack each order myself with a handwritten note and a hint of lavender, so when you open it, you get a little bit of that slow, quiet magic I feel when I'm painting.
Growing up, these animated worlds were my comfort. When I started painting, I realized the landscapes I was seeing in films felt just as real as the ones I saw back home in Kerala or here in Bangalore. That connection is the heart of The Indian Chronicles.
Each piece began as a watercolor or gouache experiment. I wanted to see what would happen if Howl walked through the prayer flags of Ladakh, or if the Catbus sped across the Thar Desert. These are not just digital reproductions; they are my personal travel journals turned into fantasy.
Quality matters to me because I am self-taught. I do not take shortcuts. I print these on premium 280-300 GSM textured paper. The texture is important because it mimics the tooth of the paper I use for my original plein air sketches. If you pick up a calendar, you will find a wooden easel included. I wanted something that looks beautiful on a desk, not just something stuck on a wall.
Whether you want a framed print of 'Totoro at Pondicherry' or the full calendar set, everything is shipped from my studio in Bangalore. It is slow, manual work, but that is how I like to do it.
Basit
I am Basit. I did not go to art school, but I learned everything by sketching the sunset at Kozhikode and the chaos of Bangalore. This Ghibli series is my way of blending the magic I love with the home I live in.
