Wondering what to plant in shady areas? This video rounds up some great options for you, including Alocasia, Syngonium, and Radermachera.
In this episode of Green Makeovers, I explain our plant choices for a Noida home, including Scodia and Areca palms for indirect light and a Traveller's palm for a sunny balcony.
For this large Gurgaon project, I explain how we had to redo everything, carefully selecting plants based on the sun and shade patterns of the garden to ensure they would thrive.
About Expert Plant Advice
Most garden failures happen because the wrong plant ends up in the wrong spot. I don’t just suggest plants; I assess your space’s specific light direction and wind intensity to create a plan that actually works. I will tell you clearly what will flourish and what is destined to fade, ensuring you stop spending money on plants that aren't built for your micro-climate.
Understanding Your Micro-Climate
Every balcony, terrace, and lawn has a unique micro-climate. What grows on a north-facing balcony in Noida will struggle on a south-facing terrace in Gurgaon. My process starts with a site visit where we look at sunlight patterns, wind direction, and water access points.
Sun vs. Shade: The Right Selection
- For Sunny Spots: If you have direct, harsh sunlight, I recommend hardy plants like Bougainvillea, Champa, and various palms that thrive when exposed to intense heat.
- For Shady Corners: In areas with indirect or low light, we shift the strategy to plants like Aglaonema, Syngonium, Ferns, and Areca palms.
Why Good Advice Saves Money
I have seen too many beautiful gardens burn out during the summer simply because the plant choice didn't match the light. When you choose the right plants from the start, you avoid the cost of constant replanting and the frustration of maintenance.
My Process
After the site visit, I provide a clear plan—a 'greenprint'—that includes a detailed Bill of Quantities (BOQ) with execution pricing. This takes the guesswork out of the project. Whether you want a lush hedge effect for your balcony or a curated look for your backyard, we focus on what survives and thrives in your space. Let’s make sure your next garden investment is a permanent one.
