The Art of Observation: Foundation Painting Classes
We teach you to train your eye before your hand. Here is how we break down objects, lighting, and form to build a solid artistic foundation.
This is where it all begins. We set up a simple still life with a plant sprig and a single light source. This controlled environment helps students focus on observing the precise shapes of the leaves and the distinct shadows they cast.
A student translates his observations onto paper. With the live setup right next to his easel, he can constantly compare his work to the real object, making adjustments to proportions, tones, and colors. This is active, hands-on learning.
The final study. This watercolor painting is the direct result of the live observation exercise. The student has successfully captured the form of the plant and the direction of the light, demonstrating a foundational understanding of light and shadow.
About The Art of Observation
When you sit down at your easel, don't just look at the subject—look for the 'why' behind the shadow. In our live observation sessions, we don't start with brushes. We start by mapping out light sources and structural geometry so that when you finally paint, you aren't just copying what you see, you are translating it onto the canvas.
Training the Eye, Not Just the Hand
True artistry begins with perception. At ArtVilla Academy, our 'Art of Observation' sessions are designed to move you beyond simple replication. We teach students to deconstruct objects, analyzing how light interacts with surfaces and how shadows define depth. Whether you are prepping for Elementary/Intermediate grade exams or just starting your creative journey, learning to see is the most critical step.
The Live Observation Process
We move away from photographs and focus on live setups. This is essential for understanding spatial relationships and true color shifts. By working with physical objects—like plant sprigs, household items, or live models—you learn to:
- Analyze Light: Understand the difference between highlight, mid-tone, and core shadow.
- Deconstruct Form: Break down complex objects into simple geometric shapes before adding detail.
- Establish Perspective: Correctly place objects within the frame to create a sense of scale and realism.
Why This Matters
Many beginners struggle because their hands are moving faster than their eyes. We slow down the process to ensure you build a strong foundation in sketching and anatomy. This discipline allows you to tackle any subject later, from portraits to complex architectural landscapes.
We operate studios in both Kandivali and Borivali, providing a space where you can practice, make mistakes, and grow as part of a community. If you are unsure where to start, join one of our painting demo sessions to see our teaching method in action. Chalo, let's start seeing the world like an artist.
