Hand-Sculpted Wall Textures & Natural Material Murals
Every wall tells a story through the touch of a hand. I work with natural clay, marble powder, and ceramic paste to build textures that do not just sit on a surface—they breathe with the architecture and age beautifully over time.
A stone-like texture gives a feeling of strength and grounding. I create these deep, layered waves by hand, making them perfect for entryways or statement walls that need to command presence.
Working with gold leaf is a delicate process. Here, I am applying thin sheets of gold to a wall, creating a textured, reflective surface that brings a sense of grandeur and warmth to the space.
Curved and ripple-based patterns infuse a space with motion and vitality. This video shows the process of painting a large, sculpted flower, where the brushstrokes follow the organic lines of the petals.
The process for an abstract textured piece begins with layering mediums to build depth. Here, I am using rollers to apply different shades of color, creating a smooth, blended background for the textures to come.
My 3D murals are designed to age gracefully. This video explains how the sculptural elements retain their character over many years, growing richer with time rather than fading like paint.
Sustainability is a priority in my work. This video showcases an abstract ocean-themed mural created with eco-friendly materials like marble sand and granite to create a tactile and environmentally conscious piece of art.
For the South Mount project, the brief was to create a mural with quiet heritage charm. This video shows the sculpting of a piece inspired by Persian and Mughal influences, designed to feel refined and personal in a modern luxury bedroom.
This heritage-inspired mural for the South Mount project features intricate floral sculptures with a distressed, whitewashed finish. The texture gives the piece an aged, antique feel that is both elegant and timeless.
Does texture matter? Yes, it absolutely changes how you feel in a room. In this video, I explain how different textures, whether smooth, rough, or rhythmic, can evoke feelings of calm, grounding, or energy.
My process is very hands-on. Here, my team and I are working with a wet plaster-like medium, using our hands to create organic textures on a canvas. This direct contact with the material is essential to my art.
About The Language of Materials & Texture
Before we commit to a single inch of the final wall, we create physical 1x1 ft sample blocks. This is where we test how your specific room's light interacts with the ceramic paste or marble powder. It ensures the texture you see in the morning is the one that gives you peace, not glare, when you walk in at night.
Why Texture Outlasts Paint
While paint relies on color, true depth comes from the physical form of the wall. In my 35 years of practice, I have found that standard wall paints fade or flake, whereas sculpted murals—using binders like marble powder and ceramic paste—grow richer with age. These are not just aesthetic additions; they are structural reinforcements. We often use organic sutli (coir rope) as an armature to build integrity for higher reliefs, ensuring the art stands strong for decades.
The Process: From Clay to Wall
Artistic integrity begins with the medium. Whether we are crafting a subtle 3mm abstract finish for a TV backdrop or a 1.5-inch relief mural for a foyer, the process remains intentional.
- Surface Preparation: We start by reinforcing the base wall, preventing the hairline cracks that plague traditional plastering.
- The Medium: I use natural, eco-friendly materials, including sadhuchi mati (special clay), because they interact with humidity and light far better than synthetic polymers.
- The Finish: Every piece is sealed, making it dust-resistant and washable with a simple damp cloth.
Finding Your Texture
The language of a wall depends on the emotion you want to evoke. Smooth, hand-troweled waves can bring the calm of a shoreline into a living room, while rough, stone-like finishes provide the grounding necessary for an executive cabin. For heritage spaces, we integrate gold leaf and deep carvings to mimic the architectural dignity of the past. If you are in Mumbai or Pune, let us discuss what your wall is trying to say.
Artistic Impressions
I am Hansa Sewani. For me, these 35 years in art have not been about decoration, but about connection. I work with my hands to turn empty walls into something you can actually feel, whether it is a calm, smooth texture or a deeply sculpted 3D relief.
