Your Guide to Custom Art Commissions
Commissioning art is a journey. From understanding your space to selecting the right materials, here is how we can bring your personal story to life.
Here are a few reasons why you should get a custom painting. It can be tailored to your space and decor, reflect your personal taste, and capture a special memory, all while supporting an artist.
A custom artwork is a truly unique and thoughtful gift, especially for an occasion like Valentine's Day. It’s a way to turn a shared moment or a special memory into something you can keep forever.
Choosing the right artwork for your space can be tricky. In this video, I share my tips on how to pick a piece that reflects your taste, fits the scale of the room, and complements your existing decor.
Want to create better portraits? I share three key tips: start with bigger shapes, add an "X factor" like gold foiling for a unique touch, and use thick paper of at least 200 GSM to hold the charcoal better.
Here are some of my go-to tips for working with charcoal. I cover everything from using a grid for beginners and working in a specific direction to avoid smudging, to the best way to varnish your finished piece.
Preserving your artwork is just as important as creating it. I share my methods for storing pieces on paper, rolled canvases, and framed artworks to ensure your investment is protected for the long term.
About Your Guide to Custom Art
Before I finalize a piece, we go through a collaborative approval loop. I share sketches and digital layouts to ensure the composition, color palette, and mood match your room’s energy before I ever put charcoal or paint to the final canvas.
Getting a custom piece shouldn't feel like a guessing game. When you work with me, we start by looking at your space. It is important that the artwork fits the scale of your furniture and complements the existing colors in the room, rather than clashing with them.
My Process
- Initial Chat: We talk about what you want. Send me photos of your space or the subjects you want me to draw.
- The Sketch: For large projects, I share a layout or sketch for your approval. This ensures we are on the same page regarding the mood and composition.
- The Medium: I use high-quality materials, like acid-free 200 GSM paper for charcoal sketches, to ensure the work lasts.
- Final Touches: Every piece gets a professional fixative or varnish to protect it from smudging or environmental factors.
How to Preserve Your Art
If you have multiple pieces on paper, store them vertically with butter paper between them to prevent sticking. For framed art, avoid stacking them flat. Always keep them in a place where they won't be exposed to direct harsh sunlight or extreme humidity. If you have questions about which style suits your room, or if you are considering a gift for a loved one, send me a message and we can brainstorm.
