Behind the Scenes: My Creative Product Photography Process
Ever wonder how a simple coffee shot comes to life? Here is the raw look at the props, lighting, and little hacks I use in my studio to turn everyday objects into stories.
A quick look at the setup for a flatlay coffee shoot. This shows how I arrange props like books, flowers, and pinecones to create a cozy, work-from-home cafe vibe.
About Behind the Scenes: My Creative Process
Most people see the final image, but the real work happens in the setup. For a flatlay, I don’t just snap and move on; I spend time balancing elements, like sourcing natural pinecones from the Acube Propstore or using books to build height, so the lighting hits just right. Whether I am faking condensation on a cold drink or using gobos to mimic window shadows, I believe the best shots come from understanding the product, not just clicking a button.
Great commercial photography is not just about having the right camera. It is about understanding how to control light and texture to highlight your brand's personality. When I start a project, whether it is for a local cafe or an e-commerce brand, I focus on the 'jugaad' (creative hack) to get the mood right.
My process involves:
-
Concept Planning: We start with your vibe. I don't use cookie-cutter templates. We discuss the mood board to ensure the props and lighting align with your brand identity.
-
Styling and Props: My studio, Acube, is stocked with everything from acrylic risers to brass items and textiles. Sometimes the magic is in the clutter, like using scattered pinecones to suggest a cozy winter vibe, or using simple kitchen hacks to make a drink look refreshingly cold.
-
Lighting Precision: Light is everything. I mix studio strobes with natural light modifiers, using optical snoots and gobos to create artificial window shadows. This adds depth that standard flat lighting misses.
-
Post-Production: A photo isn't finished until the edit is done. I focus on color calibration and technical cleanup, ensuring the image looks sharp on both web and print.
Whether you need clean e-commerce shots or a wild lifestyle campaign, my goal is to make the process transparent and collaborative. You get high-quality images, and you see exactly how we got there.
