Heritage Restoration and Adaptive Reuse Projects
A glimpse into our signature approach: blending the old-world soul of heritage architecture with modern, functional design.
This is the vision for a 250-year-old heritage home in Alibaug, which we are transforming into a modern café. Our design respects its history while creating a welcoming space that blends into the lush landscape, showing how old structures can find new purpose.
Watch the journey of this Alibaug heritage property from its dilapidated state to our rendered vision. This video captures the essence of adaptive reuse, showing the immense potential hidden within the walls of historic buildings before and after our restoration work.
We designed this serene veranda to be a bridge between the café's interior and the natural world outside. The combination of warm wood, patterned tiles, and soft lighting creates a tranquil setting for guests to relax and enjoy the view.
An intimate nook within the Alibaug café, designed to evoke a sense of calm and warmth. Through the use of arched doorways and earthy textures, we created a series of interconnected spaces that feel both cozy and open, inviting quiet moments.
The soul of heritage restoration lies in the details. Here, a skilled craftsman carefully works on restoring an original wooden door, polishing and preserving the intricate details that give the structure its unique character and story.
This is the transformation of our own studio. We took a cluttered, dated office and reimagined it as a bright, functional, and sustainable workspace that reflects our design ethos, proving that any space can be revitalized with thoughtful design.
The design process begins with inspiration and careful curation. This is a glimpse of a mood board in progress, where we bring together textures, color palettes, and architectural concepts to build a cohesive vision for a new project.
About Featured
Our approach to heritage restoration begins with a deep structural health assessment rather than demolition. We meticulously preserve original elements like teak rafters, window jambs, and stone masonry, while retrofitting modern electrical and plumbing systems to blend seamlessly into the historic architecture.
When we take on a project, especially with historical structures like the 250-year-old Alibaug house we transformed, our goal is to help the building matter again in a contemporary context. This process, known as adaptive reuse, requires a delicate balance of protecting the past while ensuring the space serves its new purpose effectively.
The Restoration Process
- Structural Integrity: Before any aesthetic changes, we focus on deep repairs. This includes waterproofing, termite treatment, and foundation reinforcement to ensure the building remains standing for another century.
- Preservation of Features: We fight to keep original features like arches, wooden rafters, and stone walls. These are the elements that give a space its identity.
- Modern Integration: We plan MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) layouts to hide modern amenities like AC units and Wi-Fi cabling within stone walls, ensuring the technology is present but visually absent.
- Material Selection: We use traditional, breathable materials like lime plaster and reclaimed teak wood. These materials not only respect the original construction method but also improve the indoor climate.
Whether you have an aging colonial villa or a traditional structure that needs a new lease on life, we prioritize sustainability and respect for the site's history. It is rarely about changing the structure, but rather about opening it up to allow light and flow to make it livable for today.
