A 250-year-old home reborn as a café. We restored the original wooden rafters and stone arches, blending historic charm with modern functionality.

The final vision for the restored 250-year-old Alibaug home, reimagined as a café. The design features a prominent veranda and open ground floor, seamlessly connecting the historic structure with its natural, green surroundings.

The outdoor seating area is designed to feel like a natural extension of the landscape. Using simple wicker furniture and flagstone paths, we created a relaxed ambiance where guests can enjoy the open air under the shade of palm trees.

A closer look at the restored veranda, showcasing the blend of traditional wooden railings and classic pendant lighting. This space was designed to be a peaceful retreat, perfect for enjoying a coffee while overlooking the property.

The ground-floor patio offers a covered dining experience that still feels connected to the outdoors. Exposed wooden beams and pillars were preserved and reinforced, maintaining the home's original architectural language.

Inside the café, we used a series of arches to open up what were once small, separate rooms. This creates a gentle flow through the space while retaining the cozy, intimate feel of the original home.

This video documents the dramatic transformation of the Alibaug property. It contrasts the initial state of the crumbling structure with the polished, elegant vision we developed for its new life as a café.

About Alibaug Café: A Heritage Transformation

We did not simply paint over the history here. The structural strategy involved reinforcing original load-bearing walls and retrofitting modern utilities like Wi-Fi and electricals into centuries-old masonry with zero visual intrusion. You get the authentic old-world atmosphere without sacrificing the comfort needed for a modern café experience.

Adaptive reuse of historical structures requires a delicate balance between preservation and modernization. In this Alibaug project, our focus started with the bones of the building. We performed a detailed structural health assessment, treating the 250-year-old stone walls for longevity while keeping the original architectural language intact. The conversion of a residential home into a commercial café meant we had to rethink the floor plan entirely. By introducing arches, we transformed small, compartmentalized rooms into an open-concept layout that invites natural light and creates a fluid connection between the indoor seating and the veranda. We avoided heavy demolition, choosing instead to strengthen existing wooden rafters and use breathable lime plaster for wall treatments. Modern amenities like AC and wiring were concealed within the masonry to ensure the focus remains on the heritage textures, not the technology. This approach allows the property to function as a bustling, modern social space while honoring its history.

I am Anjali. I believe old buildings have stories, and my job is just to help them speak again. When I walk into a space like this Alibaug property, I do not see a ruin; I see the potential for a new chapter.
