Design a Royal Nursery: Custom Teak and Cane Projects
Creating a nursery is about more than just style. For Vayu’s room, we blended timeless teak wood with playful safari themes to build a space that truly grows with the child.
The centerpiece of Vayu's nursery. This classic wooden crib, with its beautiful detailing, stands against a hand-painted jungle mural. The life-sized giraffe adds a touch of pure magic to the room.
I designed this room to grow with the child, including both a crib for now and a toddler bed for later. Both pieces are made from the same warm wood and cane, creating a cohesive look that ties the whole magical jungle theme together.
A wider view of Vayu's room, showing how the crib and toddler bed are positioned to feel like part of the jungle landscape. I'm so grateful this project was featured in Architectural Digest.
Storage is key in any nursery. I designed this custom floor-to-ceiling wardrobe with natural cane paneling to complement the wooden crib and changing table. It provides ample space while adding to the room's warm, natural aesthetic.
This view shows the expansive wooden wardrobe with mirrored panels, designed to make the room feel larger and reflect the beautiful jungle mural. Every piece of furniture was crafted to feel part of this enchanting world.
Every nursery needs a cozy corner for mom and baby. I included this comfortable armchair for feeding and story time, placed right next to the custom cane-paneled storage units.
A video walkthrough of the finished nursery. It was so special to see all the handcrafted furniture, from the personalized crib to the wardrobes, come together with the incredible murals to create a truly immersive space.
About this collection
When designing Vayu’s nursery, we focused on dual-use furniture and timeless materials. By choosing solid teak and natural cane, we ensured the pieces would age well and survive years of active use, unlike factory-made alternatives. We also carefully planned the layout so the changing area remains accessible and ergonomic for parents, proving that a nursery can be both sophisticated and deeply practical for daily life.
The Vayu Kapoor Ahuja project was a joy because it allowed us to balance elegance with the raw energy of childhood. We approached this room as two distinct worlds: one featuring a warm, classic teak wood crib against a lush, hand-painted jungle mural, and another side with a serene, black and white safari aesthetic.
It is a perfect example of how we can use textures like natural cane and solid teak to create something sophisticated that still feels inviting for a baby. We chose these materials because they are non-toxic, durable, and bring a grounded, earthy warmth to the room that synthetic furniture simply cannot match. Every piece, from the changing table to the custom wardrobe, was designed to be at the right height for caregivers, making late-night changes and daily routines just a little bit smoother.
When you approach a nursery project, think about the transitions. Your child will outgrow a crib in months, but a well-designed wardrobe or play area can evolve. That is why we integrated modular storage and thoughtful layouts that accommodate toys, books, and eventually, a school-age workspace. Whether you have a specific theme in mind or are starting with an empty room, my goal is always to build a foundation that is as functional as it is magical.
