The Philosophy of Flow: Art, Math, and Movement
I am Aditi, and I see the world in patterns. Welcome to Spinfinity, where I bridge the gap between abstract mathematics and tangible, joyful movement through flow arts.
The path of a hoop can reveal incredible geometric patterns, like finding a secret love letter from math. In this video, I traced the light trails from my hoops frame by frame to visualize the shapes created by movement. It’s a perfect example of how patterns and symmetry, the heart of mathematics, connect directly to hooping.
Welcome to Spinfinity, the space where I explore the infinite connections between movement, math, and art. Using flow props like hoops, poi, and fans, I trace the beautiful patterns that are all around us. This is the core idea behind my teaching, to help kids see and feel the math that exists in motion.
This is data visceralization in action. I used programmable light wands, or pixel poi, to translate global temperature change data into a live performance piece. This project shows how we can use movement and flow arts to understand and connect with complex information, like climate science, on a physical level.
Here I am taking on a book balance challenge while hooping. The book, "Fearful Symmetry," explores the beauty of symmetry in math, which is a core concept in my work. This is a literal and metaphorical look at how I balance my intellectual curiosity with my physical practice to create my unique approach to embodied learning.
About The Philosophy: Art, Math, and Movement
When you see my Data Visceralization performances, where I use pixel poi to turn global climate temperature charts into movement, you are witnessing math made physical. This is my core philosophy. We move past math trauma by turning complex geometry into the tangible arc of a hoop or the path of a light wand, proving that if you can move, you can understand science.
For me, the hoop is not just a prop. It is a way to understand the world. I spent years oscillating between loving school math and hating engineering math until I realized that the geometry I was practicing in my flow arts was the same math that felt so alien on paper. That realization is why I started Spinfinity.
Whether we are at the Bangalore Creative Circus in Yeshwanthpur or at a boutique studio in Koramangala, my sessions prioritize embodied cognition. We do not just memorize formulas. We use the Diameter Dance and HoopScotch to feel how volume and radius work. We use our bodies to solve the topology of a move. If you think you are not a math person, or if you think you are not a creative person, my goal is to help you open the boxes you have put yourself in.
My practice is built on a few non-negotiables:
- Progress over perfection: If a hoop drops, we laugh and pick it up. The flow must go on.
- Science in motion: I apply concepts like Hopf bifurcation to waist hooping to help students understand why certain movements feel easier than others.
- Community-led: I don't work in a silo. I constantly collaborate with fellow educators to ensure our learning environments are neurodiverse-friendly and genuinely fun.
I treat every performance and workshop as an experiment. My goal is for you to leave with a new lens through which to view your own body and the patterns around you.
