Paint & Color Schemes: Expert Guides and Tips
Finding the right shade is about more than just a color card. Discover my go-to paint codes, how to test lighting, and the 60-30-10 rule for perfectly balanced rooms.
I cannot stress this enough: always test paint swatches on-site. Colors look different depending on the natural and artificial light in a room, so sampling is the only way to ensure you love the color before committing.
Getting samples made for your color selections at the site is a critical step. It allows you to see how the color interacts with the room's lighting and other materials before you paint the entire wall.
The 60-30-10 rule is a simple guideline for creating a balanced color scheme. 60% of your room should be a dominant color, 30% a secondary color, and 10% an accent color to add a pop of personality.
Raw Cotton (Code 8459) by Asian Paints is one of my most-used neutral colors. It's a soft, versatile beige with warm undertones that creates a tranquil and inviting ambiance in any space.
If you're looking for a foolproof shade of white, try Cotton Wool (Code L104) by Asian Paints. It's a clean, warm white that works beautifully in modern, minimal spaces with classic wall mouldings.
Cotton Wool by Asian Paints is a cozy and calming white with a hint of a warm undertone. It's a great choice if you're renovating or building a new home and want a white that doesn't feel cold or stark.
Eggshell (L149) by Asian Paints is the perfect white. It's not too yellow or too blue, making it one of my go-to colors when I want a clean, neutral white for any project.
About this collection
The secret to a great room isn't just the paint code; it is how you test it. Never finalize a color based on a digital image or a tiny swatch in the store. I always insist on making a physical sample on the actual wall, then checking it at three different times: morning, noon, and evening. Natural and artificial light will shift the tone completely.
The Power of Sampling
Sampling is non-negotiable. Before you commit to painting an entire room, paint a large patch on the wall. Watch how the color behaves when the sun hits it, and look at it again after sunset with your room's warm lights on.
My Foolproof Neutrals
Over 87 projects, I have narrowed down a few shades that just work:
- Raw Cotton (Asian Paints 8459): My go-to for a warm, calming beige.
- Cotton Wool (Asian Paints L104): Perfect if you want a white that feels cozy, not sterile.
- Eggshell (Asian Paints L149): A balanced white that stays neutral in any light.
- Silk Route (Asian Paints N013): A sophisticated taupe that bridges the gap between beige and grey.
- Pilgrim (Asian Paints 6129): The only grey I trust for a moody yet classic look.
The 60-30-10 Rule
To keep a room from feeling cluttered or flat, I always follow this split:
- 60% Dominant: Usually your walls or largest furniture pieces.
- 30% Secondary: Curtains, rugs, or smaller accent furniture.
- 10% Accent: A pop of color through cushions, art, or decor.
When to Go Bold
Sometimes, you just need drama. If you are going for a library or a feature wall, do not be afraid of darker shades like Fallen Leaves (9501) or English Castle (8760). These rich tones ground a space, making it feel intentional rather than just finished.
