Designing a temple requires balancing timeless tradition with contemporary functionality. This complex on the Hubli-Bengaluru highway reinterprets Dravidian architectural principles into a cohesive, serene spiritual journey for modern visitors.

The main temple, lit up at night, stands as a beacon of faith and architectural beauty. The design respects Dravidian temple architecture while using modern construction and lighting techniques.

The entry pavilion features a grand colonnade with coffered ceilings. This space, known as the *arambha patha* (path of beginning), sets a serene and reverent tone for the spiritual journey ahead.

About this collection

The master planning here moves beyond static building design to create a deliberate spiritual journey. We organized the space into four distinct zones, including the arambha patha (path of beginning) and the adhyatmika gola. These transitions guide visitors physically and mentally from the entrance to the inner sanctum, ensuring that every move through the site feels purposeful rather than accidental.

A Collaborative Approach to Tradition

Designing a temple complex of this scale requires respect for heritage while ensuring the space functions for modern-day requirements. To achieve this, we collaborated with Temple Sthapati Swaminathan K Karuppaiah of Vivek Kala Kendra. This partnership allowed us to marry the rich, time-tested grammar of Dravidian temple architecture with contemporary master planning techniques.

Balancing Function and Spirit

While the main shrine is the heart of the site, a functional temple complex needs to support the community. The brief included integrating a guest house, kitchen, dining facilities, priest accommodation, and traditional elements like the Gaushala and Kalyani (sacred pond). We laid these out to support the flow of pilgrims without cluttering the visual path to the main shrine.

Addressing the Highway Context

Locating a spiritual space adjacent to the busy Hubli-Bengaluru highway presented a unique acoustic and visual challenge. We used the architectural layout to create a buffer, ensuring the inner sanctum remains a place of quiet reflection. By using traditional stone craftsmanship and strategic lighting, we created a landmark that stands as a beacon of faith while remaining firmly grounded in the local landscape. Our focus remains on creating spaces that serve both the immediate need and the long-term spiritual purpose of the community.
