Commercial Workspace Architecture and Facade Design
On this compact 60' x 40' Bangalore plot, we integrated a mature silver oak tree into the building's core, proving that urban architecture and nature can thrive together.
The building's east-facing orientation allowed us to strategically design openings that optimize natural light while minimizing heat gain. The monolithic red volume stands in striking contrast to the surrounding greenery.
We embraced the mature silver oak as the anchor of our design. By repositioning the building’s core, we created flexible office spaces that celebrate the tree, proving that urban architecture and nature can thrive together.

The design incorporates recessed balconies and large windows, breaking up the monolithic facade. These openings not only provide light and air but also offer tenants a direct connection to the tree canopy and the outdoors.
The interior staircase is designed with simple, strong lines using steel and concrete. The vertical balusters echo the fins on the exterior, creating a cohesive design language throughout the structure.

Inside the workspace, we framed views of the silver oak tree. This biophilic design strategy provides a soft, ever-changing natural backdrop, enhancing focus and well-being for the people inside.
About this collection
Instead of removing the mature silver oak on this 60' x 40' Bangalore plot, we made it the building's anchor. By shifting the structural core to the side, we ensured every office space enjoys a direct, leafy connection to the canopy. It is a prime example of how we handle tight urban footprints—prioritizing natural light and ventilation without sacrificing rentable floor area.
Our approach to this commercial project centered on a dialogue between the built form and the existing environment. Facing a dense urban fabric, the primary design challenge was to maximize floor space while avoiding a sterile office aesthetic.
Designing for Light and Shadow
We utilized an east-facing orientation to optimize natural illumination while mitigating heat gain. The facade features a monolithic red volume, inspired by traditional terracotta, which provides a tactile contrast to the city's concrete surroundings. To control daylight, we introduced slender metal fins, turning the building into a dynamic canvas where the shifting shadows of the silver oak animate the walls throughout the day.
Functional Planning
Beyond the aesthetic, the project addressed critical functional needs for commercial tenants:
- FSI Maximization: By strategically placing the staircases and service cores, we increased the usable floor area on the compact plot.
- Biophilic Integration: Large, deep-set windows serve as more than just openings; they act as frames, immersing occupants within the tree canopy and fostering a sense of well-being.
- Climate-Responsive Facade: The fenestration strategy utilizes custom window systems to ensure privacy while maintaining a constant visual link to the outdoors.
We design for the people who occupy the space. Whether it is an office or a boutique commercial clinic, our goal is to eliminate visual clutter and create a calm, productive environment. If you are looking to develop a commercial property that stands out for the right reasons, we would be happy to discuss your site's potential.
Yellow Door Architects
We are Juhi and Joshua, the team behind Yellow Door Architects. We started this practice because we wanted to design spaces that feel like a conversation—between the building and its environment, and between structure and nature. We focus on how light moves through a space and how it feels to work there every day.
