The Storyteller's Craft: Reading, Puppetry, and Creative Drama
We believe every child has a unique voice waiting to be found. Through storytelling, puppetry, and reading aloud, we turn pages into performances and imagination into lasting confidence.
Our library is filled with treasures, like this collection of books by David Walliams. His hilarious plots and bold characters are perfect for teaching character work, vocal variety, and the art of reading aloud.
There's a technique to reading aloud effectively. Here, two of our students demonstrate the correct posture, how to hold a book, and the importance of making eye contact, turning reading into a performance.
A new addition to our classroom library, "Anisha, Accidental Detective." We are always looking for exciting new books to use in our lesson plans and as material for our students' exams.
"A Secret in Time" joins our collection. We believe a rich and varied library is essential for inspiring our students and providing fresh material for reading exercises and character analysis.
"Agatha Oddly" is another new book we're excited to explore. Mystery novels are fantastic for teaching plot, suspense, and character development in our drama and communication classes.
We've added "The Blunders" by David Walliams to our shelves. His books are a constant source of inspiration for monologues and group scenes, packed with humor and dramatic potential.
"An Escape in Time" is a wonderful new story for our students. Historical fiction like this opens up new worlds and provides excellent material for storytelling and performance.
"The House at the Edge of Magic" is a perfect fit for our imaginative classes. We love using fantasy books to spark creativity and encourage students to build magical worlds of their own.
We're always exploring new ways to teach complex topics like biographies and memoirs. This is a work in progress, but we believe in challenging our students with ambitious material and learning alongside them.
A collection of biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs ready for a lesson. We use these books to teach students about real-life stories, presentation skills, and how to talk about influential figures.
About The Storyteller's Craft: Reading, Puppetry & Imagination
Reading isn't just about decoding words; it is about what you do with them. In our Juhu classes, we teach children how to hold a book, use their posture, and make eye contact, transforming a quiet reading moment into an engaging performance. We treat books like David Walliams' titles as tools for character work, helping students understand emotions, plot, and vocal variety rather than just scanning text.
At Yellow Brick Way, our approach to reading and storytelling is anything but static. We integrate literature into drama by using books as the foundation for character analysis and improvisation. When we pick up a book, we don't just read it. We examine the plot, debate the characters, and then physically step into their shoes.
We use sessions like "Share and Shine" to bridge reading and communication skills. When a student presents a favorite book or an object related to a story, they aren't just reciting text. They are practicing eye contact, managing their voice, and building the public speaking confidence necessary for real-world interactions.
We also dive into the technical side of reading aloud. Students learn phonology, diction drills, and breathing techniques to ensure clarity. Whether we are exploring mystery novels like Agatha Oddly or biographical memoirs, the goal remains the same: giving children the tools to express themselves clearly and creatively. This mix of structured learning and imaginative play ensures that children don't just read stories, they learn to tell them with conviction.
Yellow Brick Way
I'm Salonie, and I've spent the last 15 years creating spaces where children can be loud, messy, and wonderfully creative. My team and I focus on the kind of drama education that builds real-life confidence, using stories to help your child find their own voice.
