About From My Desk: Tips & Advice
Most students jump straight to writing code. My advice? Start dry-running your logic on paper first. If you cannot explain the flow of your program without a computer, you are just typing, not programming. In my lab in Mazgaon, we drill this till it becomes muscle memory. Stop memorizing syntax and start thinking about how data actually moves through your application.
The biggest mistake I see from fresh graduates is reliance on rote learning. Companies do not pay for your ability to repeat definitions. They pay for your ability to solve a business problem. When you are sitting in a technical interview, nobody asks for your certificate; they ask you to open your IDE and show how you solved a specific logic problem.
My Rules for Survival
- Build, don't just watch: You can watch ten hours of tutorials, but you will learn more from one hour of debugging your own code.
- The 'Why' matters: Do not just implement a library or a framework because it is popular. Understand what it does under the hood. Whether you are working with Java, Python, or C++, know why that tool was chosen.
- Dry-run everything: Before you touch a keyboard, pick up a pen. If you cannot trace your loops and variables on paper, you aren't ready to write the code. This is exactly how we handle DSA training at Visual Labs.
Why the Industry is Different
College exams usually reward memorization, but the IT industry rewards optimization. I focus heavily on Big O Notation and time complexity because that is what separates a junior developer from a lead. If your code works but crashes under load, it is useless in a real-world scenario.
Whether you are from a non-IT background switching to tech or a CS student preparing for placements, the goal is the same: becoming employable. We focus on the MERN stack, database management, and interview-ready projects because those are the skills hiring managers are actually looking for in Mumbai today. Don't worry about being a genius. Just focus on being consistent and building a portfolio that proves you can do the work.
