Advanced Keloid and Scar Flattening in Bangalore
Keloids are raised scars that grow beyond the site of the original injury. Effective management requires a medical diagnosis and targeted therapy to flatten the tissue and prevent further growth.
This is another example of a successful earlobe keloid reduction. My treatment protocol aims to significantly flatten the scar tissue and restore a more natural ear contour, relieving the discomfort and cosmetic concerns associated with keloids.
This educational graphic explains the different types of acne scars, including hypertrophic and keloid scars which are raised. Correctly identifying the scar type is crucial for selecting the most effective treatment plan.
Here, I provide more detail on hypertrophic and keloid scars. Understanding that keloids grow beyond the original wound boundary helps patients recognize the issue early and seek appropriate medical care to manage its growth.
About Advanced Keloid and Scar Flattening
Keloids are not the same as common acne marks, and treating them like a cosmetic blemish rarely works. A raised scar on your earlobe or body requires a specific protocol, typically involving intralesional steroid injections combined with CO2 laser or cryotherapy, rather than just creams. I start by confirming the scar type through visual assessment, ensuring we apply the correct intervention to break down excess collagen without damaging the surrounding healthy skin.
Understanding Keloids and Hypertrophic Scars
Many patients come to me having tried over-the-counter scar creams with no success. It is important to understand that keloids form when the skin produces too much collagen during the healing process, creating a raised, thickened mass that extends beyond the original wound. Because they have a vascular component, they often require active medical management.
My Treatment Approach
I do not use a one-size-fits-all approach for scar flattening. Every patient receives a diagnosis-led plan based on the size, location, and age of the scar. My treatment methods include:
- Intralesional Steroid Injections: I use corticosteroids like Triamcinolone, injected directly into the scar tissue to help soften and flatten the collagen fibers.
- Laser Therapy: I often use Fractional CO2 Laser or cauterisation to resurface the area and reduce the prominence of the scar.
- Cryotherapy: In some cases, I use liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy excess scar tissue.
For earlobe keloids, which are very common, I may perform a minor surgical excision followed by careful suturing to restore the natural contour of the lobe.
What to Expect
Scar flattening is rarely a single-session fix. Because keloids are stubborn, they usually require a series of sessions to see significant, lasting results. During your consultation at my clinic in Thanisandra, I will assess whether your scar is a true keloid or a hypertrophic scar, as this dictates the exact combination of injections and laser passes required. My goal is always to reduce the height and appearance of the scar while preserving the surrounding skin. Please avoid attempting to remove raised scars at home, as this can trigger further inflammation and increase the size of the keloid.
