Hear from Our Musical Community
Music education is a journey, not just a set of lessons. Here, our students and fellow musicians share how they have found their voice, discipline, and confidence at The Music Gurukul.
A clip from a musical discussion with fellow musician Kunal Agarwal. We talk about the importance of listening to diverse genres and how interacting with musicians from around the world enriches one's own art.
Our student Tanay shares his experience learning the guitar at TMG. He talks about how it's a thrilling experience that has even helped improve his memory and study habits.
Monal shares how learning the ukulele at The Music Gurukul has been a great stress-reliever and has taught her discipline and patience, skills that apply to all aspects of her life.
The legendary Ustad Zakir Hussain explains the divine origins of the tabla's rhythm. Listening to the masters is a crucial part of music education, and we share their wisdom with our students.
A simple guide on how to choose a musical instrument. We help new students look within and find the music that truly makes them happy, because that is the key to a successful learning journey.
We share some fundamental points on the best way to learn music. It's a combination of regular attendance, daily practice, active listening, and taking every opportunity to perform.
About Words from Our Community
You will often hear us talk about 'riyaz' (daily practice). It isn't just about repetition; it is the daily commitment that turns a beginner into a musician. Our students do not just learn scales or chords—they learn the patience required to master them, which is exactly why our community grows together through shared challenges, not just quick wins.
More Than Just Lessons
At The Music Gurukul, we believe that music is a skill for life, not a hobby you pick up and put down. When you look through the stories of our students—like Tanay, who found that guitar practice helped his study habits, or Monal, who used the ukulele to find balance—you see the real impact of our 'Rockstar Coaches' approach.
Why Our Students Stay
Our environment is designed to be a sanctuary for your creativity. Whether you are learning in our Matunga, Chembur, or Khar studios, you aren't just one face in a crowd. We keep our batches small, typically 3 to 6 students, so you get the personal attention you deserve. This allows our coaches to correct your posture, refine your technique, and encourage your progress in real-time.
The Gurukul Philosophy
We don't believe in shortcuts. We believe in the foundational pillars of music:
- Active Listening: As Ustad Zakir Hussain often reminds us, you must listen to the masters to understand the soul of the rhythm.
- Consistent Practice: Regular sessions, whether offline or online, form the backbone of your development.
- Performance: From 'Musical Saturdays' to our annual concerts, we ensure you have the stage time to build the confidence that only comes from live performance.
Finding Your Path
If you are unsure where to start, our team is here to guide you. We offer everything from Hindustani and Western vocals to drums, tabla, and piano. We also support those on a formal path, providing comprehensive preparation for Trinity College London and Rock School exams. The most important step isn't the instrument you choose—it is your decision to commit to the journey.
The Music Gurukul
I'm Hitesh, and I started this place because music gave me a sense of wonder I wanted to share. Whether you are learning tabla or guitar, my goal is to make sure you have a community to practice with and coaches who actually care if you are improving.
