Authentic Street Portraits: Capturing the Faces of India

I walk the streets of Delhi and Punjab to find the stories behind the faces. These portraits are unposed, candid, and honest, captured during my travels with nothing but natural light and a Nikon.

I met this gentleman on the street and was drawn to his intense, thoughtful expression. His face shows a life of experience, and I wanted to capture that character in a direct, honest portrait.

After a few moments, his serious expression broke into this wonderful, genuine smile. It completely changed the feel of the portrait and shows the importance of connecting with the people I photograph.

This is another angle from the same street portrait session. The slightly off-center composition and the soft background help to emphasize his weathered features and steady gaze.

A slight turn of the head and a glance away can tell a different story. Here, the subject seems lost in thought, creating a more contemplative street portrait.

A tight, centered portrait that puts all the focus on the subject's eyes. This kind of shot is about creating a direct connection between the person in the photo and the person looking at it.

The best part of street photography is finding these moments of pure happiness. This man's wide, infectious smile is a perfect example of the positive energy you can find on any street corner.

A candid moment of a man smiling, captured on a city street. The natural pose and genuine expression are what I look for in my documentary-style portraits.

This man's distinct look, with his turban and mustache, makes for a compelling portrait. I aim to capture the unique identity of each person I photograph on the streets.

This portrait was taken under a flyover, using the urban environment as a backdrop. The soft light and the subject's direct gaze create a powerful image that feels very grounded in its setting.

A simple, straightforward portrait of a man I met. The checkered shirt and the neutral background keep the focus entirely on his face and his calm demeanor.

About Street Portraits: The Faces of India

When I shoot street portraits, I don't look for the perfect pose. I wait for that one second when a person forgets I am holding a camera. Whether it is the harsh afternoon sun under a Delhi flyover or the soft morning fog by the Yamuna, I rely entirely on natural light. My goal is to get that unscripted expression, the one that tells the real story of the person in front of me, not the one they think I want to see.

Street photography is not about collecting pretty scenes. It is about feeling. When you book a street portrait session with me, we aren't going to a studio. We are hitting the ground in places like Chandni Chowk, Safdarjung, or the local bazaars of Delhi.

My approach is simple. I use my Nikon D3400 and a 50mm prime lens to stay light and quick. This setup helps me get close without being intrusive, which is key to capturing those genuine reactions. I do not do heavy staging or forced poses. Instead, I guide you through the environment. If we are shooting by the Yamuna Ghat, I focus on the light and the mood of the place. We work with the flow of the street, waiting for the light to hit just right.

Here is how a typical session goes:

  • No heavy makeup or wardrobe changes. I want to capture you as you are.
  • We spend 2 hours exploring, usually at one primary spot in Delhi.
  • I focus on candid shots, but I can also guide you for environmental portraits if you want a mix.
  • You receive 15-20 high-resolution edited JPEGs with my signature moody color grading.

If you have a specific location in mind, let me know. I am always looking for new streets, new faces, and a fresh story to tell.

I am the one behind the lens at Wepin. I live for the hustle of finding real stories on the streets, whether it is a chai seller's grin or a quiet moment in a busy market. I shoot to capture the feeling of a place, not just the architecture.
