Hand engraving requires patience, focus, and a steady hand. There are no shortcuts or undo buttons here, just a constant dialogue between my tool and the surface.

Sharing some insights on engraving metal surfaces. Using a dull bur at a lower speed helps create a smooth, clean finish. The underlayer of the metal naturally shows through, giving it a polished look without any buffing.

White ceramic is the most challenging surface for me to engrave. The engraved portion is barely visible, so it's a true test of precision and patience. But the subtle beauty of the final piece makes it all worth it.

The soothing sounds of hand engraving. This ASMR video captures the satisfying process of my engraving tool carving a delicate butterfly and floral design onto a smooth, black surface.

Engraving on a white surface can be tricky since the blind engraving isn't very visible. For these mugs, I had to apply the gold buff first to see the lines, then go over the strokes again to ensure a perfect finish.

About The Engraving Process

Engraving on white ceramic is one of the most challenging parts of my process because the mark is barely visible while I am working. To ensure precision, I often have to apply gold buffing mid-way just to track my progress and see the lines, ensuring that every curve of your name or date is perfectly etched before the final polish.

When you choose hand engraving over machine etching, you are choosing a process where every stroke is a conscious, human decision. I use a rotary tool to carve directly into materials like glass, metal, acrylic, and leather, which creates a deep, permanent cut that looks different from mass-produced laser work.

Why the process takes time

For metal surfaces, I keep my engraving tool at a lower speed (12k to 15k RPM) because the surface is slippery. It requires intense focus to maintain a steady hand without buffing, allowing the underlayer of the metal to show through naturally for a clean finish. When I work on perfume bottles or tech cases, I am constantly adjusting my grip to accommodate the curves and material texture.

What I can engrave

  • Glass and Crystal: Wine glasses, champagne flutes, and perfume bottles are classic choices. I can add names, dates, and even hand-painted floral illustrations.
  • Metal: Razors, cufflinks, and keychains. These require a very steady hand but offer a beautiful, polished result.
  • Leather and Tech: Wallets, luggage tags, and device cases. I use flexible, crack-resistant paints or delicate engraving depending on the surface to ensure your personalization lasts.

I do not use templates. Whether it is in English, Hindi (Devnagri), or Gujarati, I write every letter by hand. This means if you have a specific message, a short quote, or a monogram idea, I can adapt the design to fit the shape of your item perfectly. If you have an object at home that you want to turn into a keepsake, reach out and we can discuss if the material is suitable for engraving.

I started The Bloom Letters after stepping away from my career as a Chartered Accountant, finding peace in the slow, deliberate movement of the engraving tool. Every piece I work on is an exercise in patience and presence—no machines, just my hands and your story.
