Debunking Common Hair Loss Myths

From dandruff treatments to coconut oil, there is a lot of noise online. We use 20+ years of clinical experience to separate the facts from the marketing hype.

Does dandruff cause baldness? No. While you see many ads claiming this, it is not true. Dandruff can cause itching and temporary shedding, but it does not cause permanent hair loss or baldness. You can treat it for comfort, but not to prevent baldness.

Does coconut oil help with hair fall? While it's great for making the hair shaft smooth and shiny, it does not treat or prevent genetic baldness. It does not affect the enzyme that causes hair loss. Apply it if you like, but don't expect it to cure baldness.

(Kannada) Will Biotin reduce hair fall? Biotin is a vitamin, and it only helps if you have a true Biotin deficiency. If your levels are normal, taking extra Biotin will not help your hair. Its use is limited, despite what you may see on social media.

(Kannada) Do pumpkin seeds reduce hair fall? They contain antioxidants and have a very mild anti-androgen effect. However, this effect is not strong enough to treat or prevent baldness. You can use it as a food additive, but don't rely on it for hair loss.

Does Saw Palmetto help for hair fall? This is an old herbal remedy known as a "natural" anti-androgen. However, it is a very weak one. There is no good evidence that it is effective for treating baldness, and it is not a replacement for standard medicines like Finasteride.

Smoking absolutely contributes to hair loss. It decreases blood supply to the scalp, affects cell multiplication, and reduces growth factors. If you want to save your hair, and more importantly your heart, you must stop smoking.

Do helmets cause hair loss? No, there is no scientific evidence for this. However, a very tight helmet can reduce blood flow, and a dirty helmet can lead to dandruff. Your safety is first, so wear your helmet, but keep it clean and ensure it fits well.

About this collection

You might be spending time on treatments that only address symptoms—like using coconut oil for shine or dandruff shampoos for thinning—when the underlying genetic cause remains untreated. Before you commit to a specific path, it is important to separate what actually works from the marketing noise that dominates social media.

Myths vs. Reality

There is a massive amount of misinformation about hair loss. We believe in being direct about what helps and what is simply a waste of time.

  • Coconut Oil: It makes your hair shaft smooth and shiny, but it does not stop genetic baldness. It does not inhibit the enzymes that cause hair loss.
  • Dandruff: Many ads claim dandruff causes permanent baldness. This is false. Dandruff is a skin issue, not the cause of genetic hair loss. Treating it helps with comfort, not hair density.
  • Supplements: Ingredients like Biotin or Pumpkin seeds have very limited utility. Biotin only helps if you have a clinical deficiency. If your levels are normal, extra supplements will not grow new hair.
  • Smoking: This is not a myth. Smoking reduces blood supply to the scalp and affects cell growth. If you are serious about saving your hair, this is a non-negotiable change.
  • Helmets: Helmets do not cause hair loss directly. However, they can be a problem if they are extremely tight (reducing blood flow) or dirty (causing scalp infections). Keep them clean and well-fitted.

The Importance of Early Diagnosis

We often see patients who have spent years using products that do nothing, allowing the hair loss to progress significantly. Determining your path forward requires checking family history, lifestyle factors, and using diagnostics like trichoscopy. We do not promise miracles, but we do promise a clear, honest assessment of what is possible for you.
