About Vibrant Haldi Moments
The Haldi is always the messiest, noisiest part of the wedding, which is exactly why it is my favorite to shoot. I do not stand back with a long lens; I move in close to get the exact moment the turmeric paste is applied or the genuine laughter when someone gets showered with flowers. Because I work with a 4-person team for wedding packages, we ensure one person is dedicated entirely to these candid emotions while another handles the systematic ritual shots, so you never have to choose between tradition and fun.
While the Haldi is traditionally about the ritual, today it has become the most photogenic event of the week. The vibrant yellow colors look fantastic in photos, especially when we use the natural daylight.
Why the Haldi is Special
This event is where the nerves of the wedding day melt away. I focus on the interplay between the couple and their closest friends. When I shoot a Haldi, I am looking for the blink-and-you-miss-it reactions: the playful 'no' from the groom, the laughter of the bride as her friends tease her, and the small, intimate glances that happen amidst the chaos.
My Approach to Rituals
As a Maharashtrian photographer, I know the significance of these rituals. I understand the flow of the ceremony, which allows me to position myself to capture the important traditional moments without getting in the way of your family. Whether it is the application of the haldi or the collective blessing of the elders, I treat these as documentary photography rather than a staged photo session.
Planning Your Haldi Shoot
- Lighting: Since most Haldi ceremonies happen during the day, we usually have great natural light. If your event is indoors or in a dimly lit hall, I bring professional lighting to keep the skin tones natural and the yellow outfits popping.
- The Crew: For larger weddings, I bring my full team. This allows us to get wide shots of the decor and the crowd, as well as tight, emotional close-ups of the couple.
- The Style: I aim for a mix of candid and portrait. You get the fun action shots, but we also take 10 minutes at the end for clean, bright portraits of you and your partner once the ceremony winds down.
