Lifts & Dips: Mastering High-Flying Partnerwork
Lifts, tricks, and dips bring that wow factor to any dance routine, but they are built on deep trust, core stability, and precise technique. Here is a look at the practice behind the performance.
A beautiful lift against the sunset in Goa. This is a moment of perfect balance and trust between partners.
People ask what I do besides dance. Well, sometimes I do lifts and tricks too. It's all part of the art.
A snippet of a performance act. This lift is the culmination of a lot of practice and trust.
The show must go on. Even when a lift doesn't go as planned, the most important thing is to recover with a smile and keep dancing.
Sometimes the song hits harder than the fall. This is the real side of practice, where we try, we fail, and we get back up to try again.
About Lifts & Dips: The High Points
Lifts aren't about brute strength, they are about weight distribution and connection. In our studio, we practice these on suspended wooden flooring, which is a massive help for your knees and ankles when working on impact moves. It is one thing to see a clean lift on video, but we spend most of our time drilling the 'before and after'—the grip, the preparation, and the exit strategy—so you can perform with confidence, not fear.
In partner dancing, a lift is only as good as the communication between partners. Whether you are working on a simple dip or a complex aerial, the physics of the movement remains the same: it requires a solid base from the lead and absolute trust from the follower.
My approach to teaching these moves is grounded. We start from the floor up. You cannot fake a lift; you have to earn it through hours of drilling balance, spotting, and core engagement. At my Malviya Nagar studio, we keep the batch sizes limited so you get the personal attention needed to correct your posture and weight transfer in real-time.
I often tell my students: 'The song hits harder than the fall.' This is a reality of our practice. You will see photos and videos of us laughing through a stumble or a failed lift because that is part of the journey. If you aren't safe enough to fail, you aren't safe enough to learn. We prioritize technical safety—learning how to enter and exit moves without injury—so that when you are on the social dance floor or the stage, your movement is fluid and controlled.
Whether you are a beginner curious about the mechanics or an intermediate dancer looking to add high-flying tricks to your routine, we build the strength and the mindset to make it happen.

I'm Suraj. For me, dance isn't just about looking good in a video—it's 'mujh se mere tak ka safar' (a journey from me to myself). When we work on lifts and dips, I’m not just teaching you a trick; I’m helping you find the trust and balance to let go and really move with your partner.
