The Art of Detail: Nooks, Staircases & Partitions
A home’s character is defined by its smallest corners. We design staircases, hidden doors, and functional partitions that turn everyday movement into a seamless experience.
A circular staircase is a beautiful architectural feature, but it needs to be designed correctly for comfort and safety. In this video, I share the three key measurements we follow to ensure our spiral staircases are as practical as they are elegant.
For this South Ex apartment, we designed a modern staircase with soft beige marble steps and a sleek black metal railing. A contemporary chandelier hangs in the double-height volume, drawing the eye upward.
A sculpture of Nandi is placed at the base of the staircase, anchoring the space and reinforcing the home's curated, minimal aesthetic. The contrast between the black sculpture and the warm wood paneling is striking.
The same staircase, showing its elegant proportions and the beautiful contrast between the light marble, dark railing, and warm wood wall. It's a perfect example of a transitional space designed with intention.
Hidden doors are one of our favorite ways to create a seamless and uncluttered look. In this video, I break down the technical details of how we construct a jib door that completely blends into the wall paneling.
This video showcases two different ways we've designed hidden doors in a living room. One is concealed within HDHMR paneling leading to a bathroom, and the other is a veneer-clad door that matches the wall, leading to a guest bedroom.
We designed a custom suspended partition to divide the living and dining areas at Noor Haus. Instead of a solid wall, it holds two large artworks, allowing for visual connection while creating a stunning artistic feature.
A detail of the TV unit and display cabinet in the South City residence. The combination of wood, stone, and glass creates a sophisticated and layered look.
We often integrate spaces for worship seamlessly into our designs. Here, a beautiful Ganesha idol is housed in a custom-lit niche next to the TV unit, making it a divine focal point.
The music room at Sunlit Serenity is separated from the dining area by an elegant glass partition. The room itself has a moody, dark aesthetic with deep navy walls and patterned wallpaper.
About The Art of Detail: Nooks, Staircases & Partitions
A circular staircase is more than just a vertical connection; it is a significant architectural feature that requires precise measurements to be safe. For the most comfortable experience, we ensure the middle of the step is at least 300mm deep and the inner corner is at least 150mm. This technical rigor ensures that a striking design element remains practical and easy to navigate in daily life.
Precision in Interior Architecture
True luxury is found in how a space functions, not just how it looks. When we approach transitional elements like staircases, partitions, and doors, we focus on solving the problems homeowners often overlook.
The Engineering of Hidden Doors
A hidden door shouldn't just look flat; it needs to operate flawlessly. We often use HDHMR paneling to conceal entrances to bathrooms or guest bedrooms, ensuring the surface remains completely uninterrupted. The secret lies in the execution: using concealed hinges mounted inside the door frame and choosing a door with a rebated edge. This combination allows the door to fit snugly, minimizing visible gaps and maintaining the clean lines of your wall paneling. For convenience, we recommend push-to-open mechanisms or magnetic latches, which remove the need for hardware that would otherwise give the door's presence away.
Partitions That Define, Not Divide
In open-plan homes, boundaries are necessary, but solid walls can make a room feel closed off. At Noor Haus, we replaced traditional walls with custom-suspended partitions that hold art pieces. These partitions define the dining and living zones while maintaining visual transparency. They allow light to pass through and keep the home feeling connected.
Staircases as Sculptural Elements
Whether it is a soft beige marble staircase in a South Ex apartment or a sculptural spiral in a new villa, we treat stairs as a focal point. We balance aesthetics—like black metal railings or double-height chandeliers—with the essential safety requirements of tread width and rise, ensuring your staircase is a piece of art that you can climb comfortably every single day.
