How soon is now to start something new? My first time with a dragon staff, the beginning of a new journey. Khaleesi in the making.
This is how it starts. With one prop, one burn, and then you can't stop. A clip from my fire hoop journey, from the first spark to a confident flow.
When fear rises, smile and push harder. This was my second-ever fire hoop performance with five wicks, a moment of trusting my training and pushing through the nerves.

More hoops. A simple, raw fire hooping session in a natural setting, just me and the circle of fire under the night sky.
To more hooping. A celebration of the hoop, a prop that brings so much joy and challenge to my fire art practice.
In search of a new challenge, I turned to double staves. This clip shows my first burn with these props, embracing the difficulty of starting from scratch.
Been putting off the call of the doubles for far too long. A practice session with my double fire staves, embracing a new and challenging prop.
About Unique Fire Props: Hoops & Staffs
Mastering the dragon staff or a five-wick fire hoop isn't just about spinning; it's about finding the balance point where the prop moves around your body, not just in your hands. I spend hours practicing isolations—where the flame seems to hang still in the air while my body moves around it—because that moment of stillness within the motion is what truly captivates an audience.
When you move beyond traditional poi and fans, you enter the realm of technical object manipulation. My work with unique props is driven by a desire for a challenge—a way to continually 'jump off the cliff' and evolve my practice.
The Geometry of Fire
- Dragon Staff: This is where fire arts meet martial discipline. The staff doesn't just spin; it rolls over the body, creating a continuous, hypnotic wheel of flame. It requires a deep understanding of contact points and momentum.
- Fire Hooping: Using a hoop allows for expansive, circular movement. When I use a five-wick hoop, the focus shifts to technical isolations. You will see the flame trace perfect circles in the air, framed by the movement of my body. It is mesmerizing, especially when the light creates those sweeping trails.
- Double Staves: These bring a combat-inspired aesthetic to the flow. Managing two props simultaneously demands precise coordination and spatial awareness, making the performance feel more like a dance between the artist and the fire.
Safety & Execution
Because these props involve complex spinning and body rolls, safety is non-negotiable. Every performance includes a dedicated spotter with fire blankets and extinguishers. We require a clear 10x10 foot staging area to ensure the flames have space to breathe without encroaching on the audience. Whether it is a late-night terrace jam or a stage performance, my training and muscle memory ensure the fire stays exactly where it belongs—in the pattern, not on the skin.
