Sun Protection Essentials for Indian Skin
Sunscreen isn't just for beach days. It is the single most critical step in your daily routine to prevent pigmentation, tanning, and premature aging in our climate.
Choosing the right sunscreen is the most important step in preventing and treating pigmentation, especially in our Indian summers. In this video, I explain what to look for: an SPF of 30 or higher, a PA rating of +++ for UVA protection, and why a water-resistant, matte-finish formula is often the best choice for our climate.
The new whipped sunscreen mousse is trending, and I shared my thoughts on it with the Hindustan Times. While the lightweight texture is appealing, it is crucial to ensure it provides adequate SPF and broad-spectrum protection. Always consult a dermatologist before trying new products, especially if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin.
The benefits of wearing sunscreen daily are immense. It not only protects you from sunburn and reduces the risk of skin cancer, but it also prevents premature aging and helps maintain an even complexion. It is the single most effective step for overall skin health.
No matter what your day looks like, never forget your sunscreen. It is your daily shield against UV damage, which is the primary cause of dark spots, tanning, and the breakdown of collagen.
Can you be allergic to sunscreen? Yes, it is possible. If you experience redness, itchiness, or hives after application, you might be reacting to an ingredient. I can help you identify the cause and find a suitable mineral-based or hypoallergenic sunscreen.
A sunburn is more than just redness; it is a radiation burn to your skin from UV exposure. It is a painful sign of skin damage that can lead to long-term issues like pigmentation and premature aging. Proper protection is key to prevention.
I was happy to share my expertise on the importance of sunscreen in The Times of India. I discussed common myths and provided practical tips on how to choose and apply sunscreen correctly for maximum protection against UV rays that cause tanning and pigmentation.
About Sun Protection Essentials
Finding the right sunscreen feels like a chore, but it shouldn't be. Most people pick one based on social media trends, but if you have oily, sensitive, or acne-prone skin, that trendy mousse might be irritating your barrier. Sab ka skin alag hota hai, and the goal is to find a formula you will actually enjoy wearing daily, not one that leaves a white cast or makes you break out.
Choosing a sunscreen in India isn't just about grabbing the first bottle you see. Our humidity, heat, and pollution levels make specific demands on your skin. Here is how I advise my patients to break it down:
The Essentials
Look for the label 'Broad Spectrum'. This ensures you are protected from both UVA rays (which cause aging and pigmentation) and UVB rays (which cause burning). For daily use in Delhi, an SPF of 30 or higher is sufficient, but if you have a field trip or a day out in the sun, opt for SPF 50. Don't forget the PA rating—look for PA+++ and above to keep those dark spots at bay.
Texture Matters
Bas facial kar lo, kaam ho gaya — nahi hota. Your daily habit matters more. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, a matte-finish or gel-based sunscreen is your best friend. Mineral sunscreens (using zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) are fantastic for sensitive skin because they reflect light and are usually gentle, but they can sometimes leave a white cast. Chemical sunscreens are lighter but require you to wait 15–20 minutes before stepping out.
Myths vs. Reality
One of the biggest myths I bust in my clinic is that you don't need sunscreen on a cloudy day. UV rays penetrate clouds, and they certainly penetrate windows. Another common mistake is applying it only once in the morning. Reapplication is key, especially if you sweat or spend time outdoors. If you have ever experienced redness, itching, or hives after using a product, you might be reacting to a specific ingredient. Let's look at your history and find a hypoallergenic alternative that works for you.
