Saree Draping Essentials to Help You Drape Like a Pro
Getting the drape right is 50% about having the right tools. I have put together these essentials—from comfortable shapewear to specific pins—to make your saree experience smooth and stress-free.
Which petticoat should you buy? I compare the old, bulky petticoats with modern, comfortable shapewear that gives a much better shape. You can get my specially designed shapewear on my website.
What should be the length of your shapewear? It should be ankle-length, not too short or too long. That's why I have launched my own shapewear in three different lengths to suit everyone.
A very common question: where should you tie your shapewear? I explain the correct position, just on or below the navel, to get the perfect shape and comfort.
Here I explain in detail where to tie your petticoat or shapewear for the best silhouette. Tying it on the navel helps you look taller and slimmer, and my She-Wear is designed with a center tying option for this.
In this video, I explain the different types of safety pins and pegs in my customized saree draping kit. From strong pins for heavy sarees to bead pins for delicate ones, this kit has everything you need.
This is my specially curated Draping Kit. It comes with all the tools you need to follow my techniques and achieve a perfect drape every time.
My beige She-Wear, a perfect foundation for any light-colored saree. It's designed for a seamless look and ultimate comfort.
About this collection
The most common mistake I see is using outdated, bulky petticoats that add unnecessary volume. In my classes, I shift the focus to using high-quality, stretchable shapewear and specialized clips that secure your fabric without damaging delicate materials like chiffon or organza. It is about understanding the mechanics of pleating so you can move, sit, and walk with total confidence, regardless of your body type or the saree fabric.
My Approach to the Perfect Drape
Learning to drape a saree is not just about tucking fabric; it is about understanding how your body moves. Whether you are prepping for a wedding or need a professional look for a meeting in Bangalore, the basics remain the same.
Why Shapewear Matters The old-school petticoats often create bulk around the waist, making it difficult to get a sleek finish. I always recommend moving to modern, stretchable shapewear. It provides a smooth base, holds the saree weight evenly, and allows you to walk freely without the fear of the tuck coming loose.
The Right Tools for the Job In my draping kit, I have included specific tools because different fabrics require different handling:
- Bead Pins: Essential for delicate sarees like tissue, organza, or chiffon. They glide through without leaving permanent holes.
- Strong Pins: Necessary for heavy Kanjivaram or Banarsi sarees that pull on the fabric.
- Jumbo Pegs: These are your best friends when setting pleats before the final tuck. They hold the fabric in place, allowing you to get the center pleats perfectly aligned every time.
Troubleshooting Your Drape
- The Pallu Slip: If your shoulder pleats constantly fall, it is usually a pinning angle issue, not a fabric weight issue. We fix this by pinning from the inside, not the top.
- The Height Issue: Tie your shapewear at or just below the navel to keep your silhouette looking tall and proportionate.
