Creating your first hat is a milestone for any crocheter. From the textured Alpine stitch to simple, cozy ribbed brims, I help you turn yarn into a beanie you will actually love to wear.

This is a collection of unisex beanies I made, each featuring a textured Alpine stitch panel. It's a versatile pattern that looks great in any color, from mustard yellow to classic grey.

A pair of 'Sheldon' beanies, one in a solid grey and the other in a two-tone green and cream. This design is a great project for intermediate beginners looking to try front post stitches.

More color variations of the Sheldon beanie. The pattern is unisex and can be customized with different color combinations to suit anyone's style.

This is my Diamond Granny hat, which combines the classic granny stitch with a diamond colorwork pattern. The stitch markers show how I keep track of my rounds, a handy tip I share in my classes.

The 'Flora' beanie is a quick and easy project, perfect for using up leftover yarn. It features a simple cluster stitch for the body and a stretchy ribbed brim for a snug fit.

About Handmade Hats & Beanies

Many beginners worry that their hats will end up too tight or saggy, but the secret lies in understanding tension and proper ribbing technique. In our sessions, we move beyond just following a pattern; I teach you how to adjust for the perfect fit so that your beanie looks professional and feels comfortable from the moment you put it on.

Crocheting a beanie is one of the most rewarding quick wins in the fiber arts. Whether you are aiming for the deep, chunky texture of the Alpine stitch seen in my Sheldon beanie designs or the light, airy feel of a Cluster stitch like in my Flora pattern, the process is incredibly meditative.

Why Start with Hats?

Beanies are the perfect project for learning how to work in the round. We start at the crown—the top of the hat—where you learn to manage increases to create a smooth, flat circle. Once we establish the base, the sides grow quickly, giving you that 'instant gratification' feeling that makes crochet so addictive.

What You Will Master

  • Top-Down Construction: No sewing seams together at the end. We work in a continuous spiral for a seamless finish.
  • Ribbing Techniques: This is the most crucial part for fit. We use front and back post stitches to create that classic, stretchy band that keeps your hat snug.
  • Textured Stitches: We will practice the Alpine stitch, which creates a thick, squishy fabric perfect for cold weather, and explore color-change techniques for those who want to add a bit of fun to their work.

A Note on Yarn

Students often ask me if they should use a specific weight. For hats, I generally recommend a soft DK or worsted weight yarn. We can discuss your specific project in class to ensure you choose a fiber that provides the warmth you need without being too heavy. If you have questions about which hook size matches your chosen yarn, we can sort that out during our first session, whether you are joining me online or at my Kanjurmarg studio.
