I provide specialized, comfort-focused boarding for senior dogs and those managing health conditions like arthritis, prioritizing pain-free movement and mental well-being in a calm, home-based setting.

Pain in dogs isn't always obvious limping. It often shows up as sudden behavioral changes like noise sensitivity, resource guarding, or growling when asked to move. Understanding these signs is the first step to helping them.

Caring for a senior dog means paying attention to the little things. Overgrown nails can cause pain and poor grip, and muscle wasting is common. What looks like "laziness" is often discomfort, and it's my job to provide the support they need.

When managing arthritis in senior dogs, it's a mistake to restrict all movement. Gentle, controlled exercise is crucial to prevent muscle loss and maintain mobility. Too much rest can actually make things worse.

A gentle, therapeutic massage can soothe sore muscles and calm a dog's nervous system, especially after a stressful event. It's also a wonderful bonding experience, and I always watch for signs of consent to ensure they are enjoying it.

Stress can cause pain to flare up, especially for dogs with conditions like hip dysplasia. I always keep SOS pain medication handy and provide nourishing meals with joint supplements and probiotics to support their system.

Here are more subtle signs of pain to watch for. A change in gait, difficulty lying down, holding the head or tail lower than usual, or excessive panting can all be indicators that a dog is hurting.

Managing a dog's weight is critical for their joint health. Excess weight adds mechanical stress and increases inflammation, so I always monitor a dog's body condition to keep them at a healthy weight.

This series shows the different ways I support my senior dog, Candy, who has hip dysplasia. It's a multi-faceted approach focusing on environment, diet, and exercise.

"Motion is lotion" for arthritic joints. I focus on low-impact, safe exercises on non-slip surfaces. Slow, sniffing walks on a non-restrictive harness are often the best form of exercise.

A species-appropriate fresh food diet with joint supplements like glucosamine and omega-3s is a cornerstone of my care. I also have pain medication ready for days when it's needed.

About Holistic Health & Senior Care

I prioritize physical well-being by actively transforming the home environment to suit mobility needs. Instead of standard kennels, I have anti-slip mats across all tiled floors to protect aging joints and ramps placed at furniture height, so your dog does not have to jump and risk further strain. These environmental changes reduce pain and anxiety, helping your senior dog feel secure from the moment they arrive.
