Behind the Scenes: How I Create Hand-Cut Paper Portraits

Ever wonder how a flat sheet of paper turns into a portrait? It is just me, my craft knife, and a lot of patience. Here is a peek at how I cut every single line by hand to bring your photos to life. ✨

Here is a finished cut on my work mat, right next to the knife I used. You can see the tiny paper scraps that are carved away to reveal the image.

This shows a freshly cut two-person portrait. The process involves carefully navigating the blade to create both bold outlines and delicate interior lines for facial features.

A more complex composition on the cutting mat, featuring two people and a musical instrument. I love the challenge of adding personal objects that tell a bigger story.

This work-in-progress shot shows the detailed cutting required for hair and the decorative scalloped border I added to the piece.

A clean shot of the Amitabh and Shweta Bachchan portrait next to my X-Acto knife. This is all it takes: a photo, paper, a knife, and a lot of patience.

An extreme close-up showing the precision of the cuts. This is what gives the portrait its unique, hand-crafted character.

This video is the best way to see my process from start to finish. It shows me tracing the design, making the cuts, and the final presentation of the artwork.

About From Paper to Portrait: The Process

Most people think these are machine-cut, but they are actually just me and a craft knife. I carve out the negative space, which means I have full control over tiny details like hair texture and facial expressions. It is definitely not the fastest way to make art, but it is the only way to get that 3D shadow effect once the piece is in a floating frame.

The Process: Paper to Portrait

I treat every piece like a little piece of magic. It starts with your photo, which I convert into a stencil. From there, I use a precision craft knife to cut through 180-200 GSM acid-free artist paper. I don’t use laser cutters or machines—everything you see here is done by hand, which is why you can see those delicate, intentional variations in the lines.

Why the Floating Frame?

I frame these in floating frames with glass on both sides for a reason. Because the portrait is hand-cut and essentially floating, it casts real shadows on your wall. Depending on how the light hits it during the day, the depth of the art actually changes. It makes the piece feel alive in a way a standard print just can’t.

What can I make for you?

  • Single Portraits: These focus on clean lines and silhouettes. Perfect for a minimal, classy look.
  • Realistic Duos: I use more intricate negative space cutting here to capture textures like clothing folds and jewelry.
  • Custom Elements: Want a guitar, a specific flower, or a hidden date cut into the design? Just ask. I love adding those personal touches that make the gift yours.

Since this is all done by hand, I usually need a bit of time to get it right. If you have an urgent deadline, let me know early, and I will see what I can do to make the magic happen in time.
