For this entryway in Jodhpur, I installed a highly detailed textured wall panel. This serves as a dramatic backdrop for the decor and also helps to diffuse sound in the marble-floored space.

About this collection
Fluted panels do more than add texture. When installed correctly, they diffuse sound waves and break up flat, boring walls. I typically use MR grade MDF for these, which is sanded and primed before being finished with high-quality PU or Duco paint. Whether you want a clean matte finish or a specific geometric pattern, the key is the precision in the CNC routing and the seamlessness of the joints at the corners.
Why fluted paneling works
Fluted panels, or ribbed cladding, are one of the most effective ways to change a room's character without doing a major renovation. In residential spaces, like the arched headboard or entryways shown in my gallery, these panels add depth and warmth. In offices, they provide a clean, modern aesthetic that also helps reduce echo.
Choosing the right material
I generally work with MR grade MDF for these designs because it holds crisp, sharp lines during the CNC routing process. Once routed, the surface undergoes intensive sanding—a step you cannot skip if you want a defect-free finish. Without proper surface prep, the PU paint will show every imperfection.
Execution details to watch for:
- Seamless Joints: The difference between a DIY job and a professional install is how the panels meet at corners and skirtings. I ensure these transitions are flush.
- Paint Finish: Whether you prefer a matte or high-gloss Duco finish, the curing time between coats matters for durability.
- Lighting Integration: These panels are perfect for hiding LED strips or profile lights, which I plan for during the fabrication stage, not after.
If you are deciding between standard fabric panels and fluted MDF, think about the primary goal. If you need maximum sound absorption, fabric is better. If you want a striking visual feature that also provides moderate sound diffusion, fluted MDF is the right choice.
