Building Core Swimming Skills for Kids in Mumbai
Every splash in my class is intentional. I use simple, playful games to teach your child essential swimming mechanics like breath control, floating, and kicking in the comfort of your own pool.
Can your child blow bubbles in the pool? This is a critical first step for breath control. I teach children to get comfortable with their face in the water by making it a fun game, which is essential for learning more advanced swimming strokes.
For many children, the concept of breathing in water is confusing. So we start with the very basics: learning to blow bubbles. I demonstrate the technique and use lots of encouragement to build this foundational skill.
This is called 'pop-up breathing', a key survival skill. I teach young swimmers to pop their head up for a quick breath and then go back down. This helps them manage their breathing and build the confidence to swim longer distances.
Learning to kick correctly is essential for moving through the water. I guide kids to keep their body straight, head down, and kick in a fluttering motion from their hips. We practice this with support until they feel confident and strong.
Here's kicking 101 for toddlers. I teach them to point their toes, keep their legs together, and make small kicks from the hips. A strong, efficient kick is the engine that will propel them through the water.
We're practicing kicking while breathing, with the help of a pool noodle for support. This drill helps coordinate two essential skills at once, building strength and confidence for more advanced strokes. This little swimmer is doing an excellent job!
This is a great view of a backstroke, or back crawl, without using hands. This drill isolates the leg muscles, building a powerful kick and strengthening the core. It's a full-body workout that helps develop a strong and efficient backstroke.
This technique is called backstroke kicking. It teaches children how to glide smoothly on their backs by refining their leg movements. Mastering this helps them maintain a streamlined body position for effortless swimming.
Here is a young champion mastering his backstroke kick. Keeping his arms above his head and legs straight is challenging, but with practice, he is building the core strength and technique for a beautiful backstroke.
"Amara, you floated all by yourself!" This is a perfect example of a child learning to back float. It's a huge milestone that builds immense confidence and is a crucial resting position for water safety.
About Building Core Skills: Fun-damentals
You might see a child just splashing around with a pool noodle, but they are actually mastering the flutter kick or learning to balance their core. These mechanics, which I teach through games like Spidey Jumps, turn intimidating water movements into second nature. My goal is to make sure your child isn't just swimming, but understands how to move safely and efficiently without feeling like they are in a strict drill.
Learning to swim is about building a foundation, not rushing to strokes. When your child starts lessons in your home pool, we don't jump into laps immediately. We focus on the building blocks of aquatics.
Why mechanics matter
- Breath Control: This is the most crucial skill. Before a child can swim a length, they must learn to exhale underwater. I use bubble-blowing games to remove the common fear of water on the face.
- The Flutter Kick: Instead of kicking wildly, I teach kids to use their hips. This creates real propulsion. We practice this with noodles for balance, so they learn to control their body position in the water early on.
- The Back Float: This is a vital safety skill. It’s not just about floating; it’s about learning to trust the water and keeping calm. It is often the hardest psychological hurdle, but once they get it, their confidence skyrockets.
My approach in Mumbai
Since I travel to your home or building pool, I work with the specific environment your child is already familiar with. This familiarity helps them relax faster. Whether it's a private one-on-one session or a buddy class with a friend, I customize these drills. We keep it light with moves like monkey walks and pancake flips because a child who is having fun is a child who is learning. No stress, no panic, just steady progress toward becoming a confident swimmer.
