AfroDesi Beats: Where South Asia Meets Amapiano
I’m Mr. Saj, and I’m on a mission to bridge South Asia and South Africa through sound. Whether I’m live in the mix or cooking up new tracks in the lab, this is where the AfroDesi journey comes alive. 🌍
This is the moment I live for. Seeing the crowd's reaction when the AfroDesi switch-up hits is everything. This blend of 'Monalisa' and 'Chaleya' at AFRODESI LDN shows exactly what my sound is all about, creating unexpected connections that get everyone moving.
This is a look at my debut project, SA 2 SA, in its natural habitat. 'Tala Umdanso' brings together South Asian drums and South African Amapiano grooves. It’s more than just a track; it’s a sonic journey from one continent to another, all produced by me.
Welcome to the lab. This is a behind-the-scenes look at how the SA 2 SA project came to life, blending Carnatic flute melodies with Amapiano beats. It's a spiritual process, working with talented musicians like 2flutes to create something authentic to both cultures.
Bringing Punjabi vibes to an Afrobeats rhythm at AfroDesi NYC. This 'Tauba Tauba' blend is a perfect example of how I love to mix sounds. The energy from the crowd when they hear something familiar in a totally new way is unmatched.
Proving that music has no borders, this was a live blend of Afrobeats and Arabic music at No Nazar. I used Serato Stems to mix 'Allah Aleik Ya Sidi' with 'Shake Body' on the fly. My reaction when I realized it worked perfectly says it all.
It was an honor to take over the BBC Asian Network for their Pure Spice show. For a whole month, I got to share the AfroDesi sound, play unreleased tracks, and highlight other amazing producers and DJs pushing the culture forward. This was a huge milestone in the journey.
This is my debut EP, "SA 2 SA Vol. 1," a project that started as an idea back in 2021. It's my first body of work completely produced by me, weaving together Carnatic music and Amapiano. Each track is a different spiritual journey, available now on all streaming platforms.
About Featured
People always ask how I blend a Carnatic flute with a log drum. It’s not just layering tracks, it’s about finding the rhythmic cycle that fits. I don't just loop beats; I actually play live percussion and use Serato Stems to flip Bollywood classics into Afrobeat edits in real-time. If you want a custom mashup that hits differently, I can handle the tempo warping and harmonic mixing to make sure your choreo stays locked in.
The AfroDesi Movement
My sound is all about the SA 2 SA connection. It started back in 2019 when I realized that the spiritual rhythm of Amapiano felt incredibly close to my roots in Carnatic music. That’s how the 'SA 2 SA' project was born. It isn't just about smashing genres together; it’s about respect for both cultures. Whether it’s a Punjabi track mixed with Afrobeats or a Tamil Kuthu blend, my goal is to keep the groove authentic.
Inside the Lab
When I’m in MRSAJSTUDIOS, I’m obsessed with the details. I’m usually tracking live electric guitar or tabla to give the electronic beats an organic texture. If you’re looking for custom production, I deliver everything from radio-ready arrangements to club-ready stems. I’ve handled everything from simple mashups for wedding choreography to full EPs.
Live Vibes
The energy in the room changes when the beat switches up. That’s the AfroDesi experience. I focus on harmonic mixing, ensuring the keys and tempos are locked so the transition feels natural, even when the genres are miles apart. From No Nazar in London to sets in NYC, the reaction to these switch-ups is why I do what I do. If you have a vision for your event or a track that needs a fresh AfroDesi spin, let’s talk.
