A flawless makeup look starts with the right canvas. I teach you how to prep any skin type, identify undertones to stop ashy bases, and create a sweat-proof finish that actually looks like skin.

Getting the base right is everything. I'm demonstrating how to choose between a pink and yellow-toned base to avoid an ashy look, and how to build it up without it becoming cakey.

Working with deeper skin tones requires a different approach. I teach how to even out the skin tone without making it look unnaturally light, respecting and enhancing the client's natural complexion.

Why does makeup look cakey? Often, it's because the product has dried on the mixing tray. I explain why it's important to work with fresh product for a smooth, seamless blend.

Proper moisturizing is the first step to a flawless base. I demonstrate how to apply moisturizer generously and massage it into the skin, avoiding the under-eye area to prevent product from slipping.

When building your kit, you must have at least two shades of the same foundation brand, a light and a medium. I explain why mixing brands can lead to inconsistent results.

How much product should you pick up on a beauty blender? I show the technique of gently touching the blender to the foundation to avoid wastage and ensure a smooth application.

Do you use color correctors in your daily makeup? I explain the difference between professional application, where correction is key, and personal makeup, where it's often skipped.

How do you know if a foundation has a pink or yellow undertone? I show a simple swatch test on my hand to make the difference clear and obvious.

Choosing the right quantity of foundation is as important as the shade. For a full-coverage bridal look, you need enough product to cover the face and neck evenly.

Before any makeup, the face must be clean. I always recommend a face wash, but if that's not possible, using a wipe is the next best thing to remove dirt and oil.

About Mastering the Canvas: Skin Prep, Base & Sculpting

The biggest reason makeup turns cakey isn't the product quality, but how you handle it on the tray. If you pump out all your foundation at once, it starts drying before it even touches the face. I teach my students to work in small, fresh amounts. It keeps the texture smooth, prevents cracking, and gives you total control over the blend. It's these small, disciplined habits that separate a hobbyist from a professional.
