The Reality of Being a Professional Stylist
Fashion isn't just runway glitz and high-glam events. Here is the unfiltered reality: early flights, hotel room fittings, and the intense on-set hustle.
The little moments that make all the hard work worth it. Seeing my name on a placard at the airport for the first time was a small thing, but it made my day and reminded me I was on the right path.
This is what shoot prep really looks like. Arriving at the hotel, changing into work mode, prepping all the outfits from the suitcase, and grabbing a quick meal before a long day. This is the essential groundwork for any successful styling project.
A quiet moment on the set of the music video 'Razdariyan'. As a costume stylist, a lot of my job is watching the monitor to ensure every detail of the wardrobe looks perfect on camera and supports the story.
Here's a glimpse into the wardrobe selection process with stylist Mohit Rai for Shalini Passi. We're in her personal closet, surrounded by incredible designer pieces, curating looks for the show. This is a key part of personal styling.
The best part of a long shoot day. Getting a moment to connect with the incredible Mrunal Thakur. Building relationships with artists and the team is just as important as the clothes in this industry.
About Behind the Scenes: A Stylist's Reality
It is not just about picking nice outfits. A typical shoot day starts hours before the talent arrives, sorting garments by sequence, managing on-set logistics, and handling unexpected wardrobe malfunctions with a portable steamer in one hand and safety pins in the other. It is chaotic, but seeing the vision click on the monitor makes the grind worth it.
Being a stylist is less about the glamour and more about the logistics. When I am on set, my focus is on how the fabric moves under studio lights and ensuring the talent feels confident in what they are wearing.
The Real Work
- Prep: It starts long before the camera rolls. Organizing wardrobe trunks in a hotel room, color-coding garments, and making sure the steamer is ready are the daily rituals.
- On-Set Etiquette: You need to know when to step in and when to stay back. Whether I am assisting a senior stylist on a Netflix project or managing a personal shoot, the priority is always seamless execution.
- The Career Pivot: I did not start here. Coming from a statistics background, I had to learn the industry from the ground up, dealing with self-doubt and the constant hustle.
This is why I started mentoring. If you are trying to switch careers or enter the styling world, you do not have to figure it all out alone. From managing your first shoot bag to cold-emailing for internships, I share the practical steps that worked for me. Let’s talk about your path and how to start your styling journey for real.
