Learning Beyond the Classroom: Experiential Education in Haralur

Real learning happens when children engage with the world, not just a textbook. From local farm visits to understanding traffic safety, we bring our curriculum to life through hands-on discovery.

Our trip to Martin Farm in Sarjapur was a fantastic day of experiential learning. The children got to see and interact with various farm animals, connecting their classroom lessons to the real world.

A visit to the local vegetable shop is a practical life lesson for our senior children. They learn about commerce, identify different vegetables, and practice social graces in a real community setting.

We believe in sharing the earth with all beings. Experiential learning moments like feeding a cow teach children compassion, respect for animals, and their role in the larger ecosystem.

Experiential learning is at the heart of what I do. When a cow and her calf visited us, the children learned about empathy and our connection to other living beings by feeding them directly.

A young student gently offers food to a calf. These gentle interactions with animals are invaluable for teaching kindness and overcoming any fears, all under careful supervision.

A child learns to care for an animal by feeding it. This hands-on experience connects children to nature and teaches them about the responsibility we have towards other living creatures.

A beautiful moment of connection between a child and a calf. These real-world experiences are a core part of our curriculum, fostering a sense of wonder and respect for nature.

About this collection

We don't just talk about community helpers or nature; we take our students out to meet them. For example, our senior children visit local shops in Haralur to learn about commerce and social graces, while our younger groups get hands-on experience feeding animals at farms in Sarjapur, turning abstract concepts into tangible life lessons.

Maria Montessori believed that the world is the child's third teacher. While our classroom provides a calm, prepared environment for concentrated work, we know that children also need to see the real world in action to internalize what they learn.

Our approach to experiential learning is purposeful. When we take a trip to a nearby farm, it isn't just a day out. It is an opportunity for children to overcome fear, practice empathy by caring for a calf, and observe biological processes firsthand. We carefully supervise these moments so children feel safe to explore their curiosity.

Similarly, our lessons on civic duty are practical. We don't just use flashcards to teach traffic rules. We set up model roads and traffic lights in our play area to help children understand safety, responsibility, and the importance of following rules in a community setting. This physical engagement helps these concepts stick in a way that lectures never could.

By integrating these outings with our indoor work—like pouring, sewing, and sensorial exercises—we help children connect their developing skills to the actual environment they live in. Whether we are observing how flowers change color in colored water or navigating a vegetable shop, every excursion is designed to foster independence, observation, and a genuine love for the world around them.

I started Ken Montessori in 2013 as a small home for kids, and a decade later, we are still that same tight-knit family. My team and I focus on trusting the child to lead, whether they are navigating a real-world field trip or exploring our quiet, prepared classroom.
